? As good as the season-ending Chase was, the fact that three recent race winners in David Reutimann, Brian Vickers and David Ragan are still seeking rides means the sport's not out of its woods yet. [Scene Daily]

? Kevin Harvick is already ready to start 2012, and based on how close he's come to the Cup the last two years, you can't really blame him. But will a new crew chief give him better results? [Speed]

Brian Pattie named Clint Bowyer?s new crew chief

Brian Pattie named Clint Bowyer?s new crew chiefHey, news that doesn't involve ugly separations! In a confirmation of long-running rumors, Brian Pattie, former crew chief for Juan Pablo Montoya, will take over top-of-the-box duties for Clint Bowyer as both join Michael Waltrip Racing.

Bowyer will be driving the No. 15 Five-Hour Energy Toyota Camry. Pattie has won 18 times on the Nationwide circuit, and he guided Montoya to a Chase berth in 2009 and a Watkins Glen win in 2010. Plus, he was able to handle the radio presence of Montoya, hands-down one of the most critical drivers in Sprint Cup.

Bowyer, Pattie and Waltrip all had glowing words for each other in the press release announcing the hiring.

? Waltrip: "Brian is someone whose [sic] been on our radar for a very long time."

? Bowyer: "We both grew up working on dirt cars and have pretty similar backgrounds ... I think we speak the same language."

? Pattie: "I know how close [MWR] is to joining the upper echelon of the Sprint Cup series."

So nice to see team, driver and crew chief so happy together, isn't it?

Official: Ferrari increases customization options with new Tailor-Made program

Ferrari Tailor-Made

Good things come to those who wait. Or so the saying goes, at least. And while that may not seem like something you'd associate with performance automobiles like Ferraris, maybe it should. Because while some will pay a premium to get a Ferrari - any Ferrari - right away, others are willing to wait to get theirs just the way they want it. And when we say 'just the way they want it', we mean just the way they want it.

To meet the demands of customers willing to shell out a little extra to specify every last detail of their new sports car, companies like Ferrari have been gradually upping their customization portfolio. Maranello's latest is called, appropriately enough, Ferrari Tailor-Made, and encompasses a wide array of customization options.

Ferrari breaks them down into three categories: Scuderia (which encompasses motorsport-derived materials like carbon fiber and Alcantara), Classica (with pastel colors from the company's back catalog, cashmere and velvet trim) and Inedita (with avant-garde materials like denim and matte paint jobs).

The limited-edition 599 GTB 60F1 grew out of the Tailor-Made program, and Ferrari has put together three unique one-offs to demonstrate the extent of the possibilities: a 458 Spider with NART stripes, chamois leather upholstery, quilted fabric and high-tech woven aluminum/fiberglass dashboard trim; an FF in Grigio Ingrid with pinstripe cloth, cashmere headliner and teak-trimmed cargo area; and a California decked out to Lapo Elkann's specifications in denim with matte Blu Scozia finish.

Of course, with such an array of options, each example coming out of the studio will be completely unique, guided by a personal designer at the Ferrari Styling Centre, and assuredly fetching a hefty premium over the already considerable list price. Follow the jump for full details and check out the images in the gallery for a closer look.

Victory pays off: Brad Keselowski gets Penske extension

Victory pays off: Brad Keselowski gets Penske extensionAmazing things happen when you go on a historic run and vault your way into the Chase, like multi-year contract extensions.

As recently as July, Brad Keselowski was looking like a talented but undistinguished member of the Sprint Cup field, running in the 20s and performing weakly enough that Kurt Busch complained of having no teammate assistance.

Things change in a hurry. Keselowski won three races, very nearly vaulting himself into the Chase on rank. (Side note: if he had, he would have bumped out eventual champ Tony Stewart.) He snagged a wild card, and would go on to finish fifth in the standings, ahead of Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon and both Busch brothers. Not a bad turnaround, huh?

As a result of his performance, Keselowski and crew chief Paul Wolfe have received contract extensions from Penske. While Penske didn't disclose exact terms, both deals were "multiple-year" arrangements. Wolfe had previously crewed Keselowski to the 2010 Nationwide championship.

Keselowski has, as yet, not made a public comment on the issue, though he is in Vegas for Champions Week. On an unrelated note, he disclosed at the "NASCAR Newlywed Game" that he gets drunk very easily. He's certainly got enough to celebrate these days.

Peter Gethin dies aged 71

Peter Gethin, the winner of the 1971 Italian Grand Prix, has died following a long illness. The former BRM, McLaren and Embassy Hill Lola Formula 1 driver, who famously triumphed at the race that featured just 0.61s between the top five finishers, was 71. The son of a professional jockey, Surrey-born Gethin first came to prominence when he was already in his late 20s, as a front-runner in British Formula 3, but he really found his feet in Formula 5000, winning the British title in 1969 and '70

Spengler: Pitstops crucial for BMW

Bruno Spengler believes honing pitstops and race strategies quickly will be crucial to BMW's chances of success in its return DTM campaign in 2012. The German manufacturer is returning to the series after 20 years away next year, with Spengler, who finished third in the 2011 standings, switching over from Mercedes. Speaking for the first time publicly as a BMW driver, Spengler said that perfecting pitstops, which take between two and four seconds in the DTM as opposed to the much longer stationary times in the GT contests that BMW is used to, would be a key element during the season.

Indianapolis Colts try to get some Tony Stewart mojo, still fail

In a now-desperate attempt to get some winning feel in their ranks, the Indianapolis Colts invited Tony Stewart (the shorter one, pictured above with Colts tight end Dallas Clark) to come hang out on the sidelines as the team played the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

The Colts lost, 27-19, and remain winless on the season. They're 0-11, and they're headed straight for 0-16 territory.

Perhaps it's Stewart's example that's causing so much trouble. After all, he went winless during his regular season and then came back to win the championship. Come on, Colts! The Super Bowl's just out there waiting to be snagged!

Kurt Busch out at Penske Racing

UPDATE: Kurt Busch out at Penske RacingKurt Busch will not return to Penske Racing in 2012.

Monday morning, Busch released the following statement:

"Coming to a mutual agreement to go our separate ways is a positive step for me. Over the Thanksgiving holiday I took time to reflect on what is most important to me and realized I need to find a way to put the fun back into racing. It's time for a fresh start. Leaving a great organization and a lucrative contract is not easy, but it allows me to take a deep breath and work on things that can make me a better driver and a better person.

"I recognize the passion and emotion that have helped me succeed on the track need to be better channeled off the track. The past few months I began working with a sports psychologist to help me better deal with my emotions, especially following moments of frustration during competition."

On Sunday, the Charlotte Observer and That's Racin reported Busch had been fired.

From ThatsRacin.com:

Busch will not return next season to drive Penske Racing's No. 22 Dodge, multiple sources confirmed to the Observer and ThatsRacin.com on Sunday night.

An official announcement of Busch's departure from the organization is expected from Penske on Monday.

The final straw cameat the season's final race at Homestead where he was videotaped swearing at a reporter, an incident thatresulted in a$50,000 fine from NASCAR. At Richmond, he had to be restrained from going after a reporter in the garage and ripped another reporter's transcript in half.

Earlier this week, Busch admitted that he was seeing a sports psychologist for his temper and anger issues, which have been on display during multiple radio tirades aimed at his crew chief and crew. The man on thereceiving endof those rants for the past two years, crew chief Steve Addington, parted ways with Penske at the end of the year and will be the crew chief for Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart in 2012.

WithBusch out of hisride at Penske, the moveposes two huge questions:Who will fill his emptied seat in the No. 22 and where does Busch go next?

Remember, thisisn'tthe first time Busch has been fired. In 2005, just a year after winning theinaugural Chase for the Sprint Cup, Busch was suspended by Roush Racing with two races to go in the season after being cited for driving recklessly near Phoenix International Raceway. After the suspension, Roush president Geoff Smith said that the team was retiring from being Busch's apologist.

When he departed from Roush, Busch had already been slated at Penske to fill the seat of the retiring Rusty Wallace. Now, with sponsorship concerns forcing teams like Roush and Richard Childress Racing to downsize to three cars and the closure of Red Bull Racing, Busch's careercould beat a definite crossroads. He's one of the best drivers in NASCAR. But losing a job at Penske could mean he may never be at one of the best teams again, though former teammate Jeff Burton tweeted this:

Big news. Kurt will find a ride in the future. He has enough talent, someone will give him a shot. He will have to show he's learned.

As of now, there's no top-notch ride available. Busch could drive for a team with lesser equipment, or take a year off and prove to teams and sponsors that he's a changed driver in the hopes of landing a fully funded ride in 2013. However, those optionswill belimited a year from now, too. He's burned bridges at Roush (and by relation, Richard Petty Motorsports),and the stables at Hendrick, Childressand Gibbs are full.

The emerence of Brad Keselowski in 2011 would makeparting ways with Busch easier. In the secondhalf of the season, Keselowski developed into the caliber of drivera team can call its No. 1.

So who will Penske hire to drive the No. 22? David Ragan, David Reutimann and Brian Vickers would instantly become the top candidates for the open seat.Ragan is 26, just won his first career Sprint Cup race at Daytona and is clean-cut and polite ? a major reason why UPS became his sponsor. Both Reutimann and Vickers have two career Sprint Cup wins, but Reutimann's age, 40, may be working against him, while Vickers, who had his own run-ins this season, struggled in 2011.

Asfar as sponsorship,Shell, which expressed disappointment with Busch's actions at Homestead, likely will stay on board.Part of the move fromRCR to Penske in 2011 was as a partnershipacross all of Penske's businesses.

Stewart: No regrets over Grubb switch

Sprint Cup series champion Tony Stewart expects to have a better empathy with new crew chief Steve Addington than that he had with Darian Grubb for the past three years. Earlier this week Stewart Haas Racing announced the hiring of former Penske crew chief Steve Addington to replace Grubb, who went on to win the title this year despite having already been told during the Chase that he wouldn't return in the position with Stewart next year. While admitting his team was faced with an awkward situation while trying to contend for the title during the play-off, Stewart now expects the transition with Addington to go smoothly as defending champions in 2012

Breaking: Aptera pulls the plug

Aptera 2e

Just over a month ago, Aptera was promising rebirth with Aptera 2.0. The promise will not be kept. Today, the company announced it is closing its doors, effective immediately.

In an email to supporters, president and CEO Paul Wilbur wrote, "We are out of resources." His letter (available in full after the jump) reveals many details about the behind-the-scenes at the EV start-up, including DOE discussions about development of a plug-in Camry-like sedan. The company was talking to the DOE because it was asking for an ATVM (Advance Technology Vehicle Manufacturing) loan. Aptera was recently given a Conditional Commitment Letter for a $150 million loan but could not find the required matching funds to actually collect the money, even though the company was still raising money this summer.

Speaking of money, this news raises a host of questions, including what happens to the people who put down deposits on an Aptera 2e. Also, will some of the intellectual property that the company developed find a new home elsewhere? Wilbur's letter seems to indicate that is a possibility:

We remain confident, even as this chapter closes, that Aptera has contributed tech new technologies to build a future for more efficient driving. Through the dedicated staff at Aptera, our board and suppliers we have touched this future. All that remains is for someone to grab it. We still believe it will happen.
