Will Power admits that he surprised himself with the lap time that gave him pole position at St Petersburg for the third consecutive year. Power earned himself the top spot with a 1m.01.3721s effort that was 0.6s quicker than he'd gone in free practice earlier in the day, and 0.3s quicker than his own track record for the St Petersburg circuit, which he'd previously set in qualifying for the 2010 race. Penske team-mate Ryan Briscoe, who qualified second, was 0.18s off Power's time.
