What?s at stake in The Gatorade Duels
For most of the field, Thursday's two 150-mile Duels will be a chance to get some more laps on the track in race trim, and they'll see how their cars perform without pushing the envelope too far. Here's the spotter's-eye view of the two duels:
Duel 1: Carl Edwards and Dale Earnhardt Jr. make up the front row. Big names in this field also include Brad Keselowski, Tony Stewart, Juan Pablo Montoya, Danica Patrick and Denny Hamlin. (Full list here.)
Duel 2: Greg Biffle and, yes, Casey Mears are on the front row, with major names including Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Kasey Kahne, Kyle Busch and Kurt Busch in the mix here. Clint Bowyer starts in the back of this Duel because of violations. (Full list here.)
[Dan Wetzel: Daytona 500 wreck proves Danica Patrick's toughness]
But for 10 drivers, including some major names of the not-too-distant past, the Duels represent their last chance to get into the field of the 2012 Daytona 500. With 39 spots already taken, only four spaces remain ... and there will be some well-known drivers heading home a lot earlier than they wanted to come Thursday afternoon.
In the first Duel, you've got Michael Waltrip, Michael McDowell, Mike Wallace and Robby Gordon. In the second, Kenny Wallace, Dave Blaney, Joe Nemechek, Bill Elliott, Robert Richardson and JJ Yeley.
Here's how it will work: the top two non-guaranteed drivers in each duel will get in. The next three spots go to the drivers with the highest qualifying speeds (in this case, Trevor Bayne, Tony Raines and David Stremme). If any of those drivers manages to race his way in by finishing in the top two in his duel, Kenny Wallace, Blaney and Waltrip would be in line to take a spot. The final spot will go to a past champion (eitherElliott or, if necessary, Terry Labonte.)
Robby Gordon, McDowell, Nemechek, Richardson, Wallace and Yeley have no choice but to race their way into the Daytona 500. No pressure there, right?
In other words, pay very close attention on Thursday afternoon. It's going to change minute by minute and lap by lap.

Video: We have the first scary wreck of 2012
And we officially have our first "Wow, that was a little intense" wreck of the 2012 season, as Jeff Gordon went a-tumbling in the closing laps of Saturday night's Bud Shootout. Gordon was attempting to nudge Kyle Busch out of the way and set off a reaction that ended with Gordon himself cartwheeling sideways on the track apron. He was fine, the eternal reminder of how safe these cars are, but it was a spooky few moments as his car kept shedding piece after piece and didn't slow down.
"This was not how I wanted to start the 2012 season," Gordon said after clambering out of the flipped vehicle. "I've never been upside down in one of these cars. The hit to the wall was much harder than the rest of it. The roll was pretty soft and pretty easy. The protection we have inside of these cars is amazing because I didn't even hardly feel any of it. The toughest part is when you're laying upside down and you can't get out of the car. The roof was caved in a little bit and that was no fun."
NASCAR couldn't have asked for a better advertisement for the "we watch for the wrecks" crowd, and considering the way the field thinned out Saturday night, the Daytona 500 literally is any driver's race to win. If you're on the track, you're in the mix ... and also in the line of fire.

The Daytona 500 fireball animation video is a letdown
So, so much more that could have been done here. Next Media Animation of Hong Kong and Taiwan, which specializes in quickie animations of breaking news events, whipped up a little something to explain just what the hell went wrong in the Daytona 500. Alas, it's a pretty routine crash recreation; no dancing devils or thrash-metal guitarists to be found. A disappointment, but hey, at least NASCAR is playing big in the Far East.

Creepy Dale Earnhardt Jr. welcomes you to Daytona

So every year, NASCAR sets up these photo shoots which are supposed to look "raw" and "cool" or whatever but mostly end up looking rather terrifying, like this shot of Dale Earnhardt Jr. in what appears to be the garage from the "Saw" flicks. Also: Junior may in fact have a family of badgers living in his beard. Say what you will about the guy, he can grow some facial hair. And it looks like he might shoot you if you get lippy with him about it, too.

Mark Martin really isn?t upset about not winning Daytona, promise
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ? If you'd lost a Daytona 500 the way Mark Martin did above, missing out by three feet to Kevin Harvick in 2007, you could be expected to have a little bitterness. But to hear Martin tell it as he gears up for his 28th tilt at the Great American Race, he's cool with the fact that he's never won here. Totally. Seriously. Really. No fooling.
"No, it doesn't bother me at all," he said. "None. Why should it? ... I have not lost one ounce of sleep over it, other than when I missed it by three feet in 2007."
Martin's runner-up status at Daytona mirrors his perennial runner-up status in the Sprint Cup, but to hear him talk, he seems to have reached peace with it ... or at least, he's trying very hard to convince himself of that.
"Nobody ever told me I was going to be the greatest of all time," he said. "I figure I'm darn lucky to have been able to be in this sport, stumble around and win a few things. I'm not owed anything ... I've been lucky enough to win a few races. You don't get to choose which ones they are."
For Martin, true strength is getting back up again after you've been knocked down. "When I was a teenager, I thought I was going to win the Daytona 500," he said. "Ain't happened. But it hasn't stopped me from trying."
And he expressed some understanding about what Carl Edwards, he of the tie-breaking loss to Tony Stewart last season, must be going through.
"Look out Carl, that's all I've got to say," he said. "It looks like he's going to win a bunch, but you never know. At least I didn't tie!"
This year, Martin will run a partial schedule for Michael Waltrip Racing, picking and choosing the races he wants to run. And he's insisted that he'll stick to that schedule no matter what happens in his races. Martin is following in the steps of Cale Yarborough and David Pearson, he noted, running the races where he feels most comfortable.
And he's pleased with MWR, which he believes is "poised to make a move toward the dominators in the sport," Martin said. "It's an exciting time there. They have a lot of great sponsors, and not a lot of people can say that ... Michael is funny, and he is fun, but he is no goof. He's a smart guy. I didn't realize how smart he was until I started working with him."
Back in 1982, Martin showed up at his first Daytona 500 with his own car and no sponsor and left here broke. He's in a little better shape now ... and maybe, just maybe, he can get that win that's eluded him for so long. At this point, he's got as good a chance as anyone ... but even if he doesn't close the deal, he's doing just fine.
"I'm so fortunate to still be doing what I love with all my heart," he finished, "and have people to support that."

Official: Jaguar Heritage hosting Swallow-to-Jaguar 90th Anniversary Tour
Filed under: Classics, Jaguar, UK, Event Alert, Luxury

Long before Jaguar was a five-time Le Mans victor instantly associated with the Leaper icon and cars like the the E-Type, it was Swallow Sidecar, making hexagonal outriders like the one pictured above. When the company got into automobile production it maintained the name Swallow and produced ornately turned-out coupes like the Austin-Swallow, Wolseley-Swallow and the prewar speedster known as the SS-100, the SS standing for Standard-Swallow. It wasn't until after the war that company head William Lyons would, for obvious reasons, swap the SS tag for Jaguar.
This year is the 90th anniversary of the Swallow Sidecar company, so the Jaguar Heritage Trust is hosting a circuitous Swallow to Jaguar 90th Anniversary driving tour from Coventry to Blackpool. The eight-day jaunt begins September 2, 2012 and is open to any of the marques under the historic Jaguar umbrella, including Swallow, SS, Lanchester, Daimler and Jaguar.
There's a press release after the jump with all the details. And for those who have wondered about the closure of the Jaguar Heritage center this September, we just spent two days in Coventry walking through the whole collection and we'll have a report with good news shortly.
