2014 Porsche Macan Spy Photos: The Cayenne?s Little Brother Progresses

What It Is: A cleverly disguised prototype of the upcoming 2014 Porsche Macan crossover. The Macan?which previously went by the codename ?Cajun??is Porsche?s second SUV and is smaller than the Cayenne. It will do battle with other mid-size luxury crossovers like the BMW X3, the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, the Audi Q5, and the [...]

Danica Patrick?s first dance with the Lady in Black was a rocky one

Well, it's a start.

Danica Patrick has met the Lady in Black, and the first round goes to Darlington. In the first practice, Patrick recorded the slowest time of any driver, 167.997, nearly 10 mph slower than leader Kevin Harvick.

Now, before the freakouts begin: Patrick knows exactly where she belongs in the Sprint Cup pecking order. "I'm not coming in thinking I should be anywhere in particular based on my extreme lack of experience and knowledge of this place," she said after the practice. "Darlington was chosen as a track to come to in a Cup car because of how difficult it is and because of how much track time it takes to get comfortable."

Patrick earned her first Darlington stripe, hitting the wall once in the Nationwide car and four times in the Cup car. "I definitely think getting through the night with a respectable night is what I'm hoping for in the Nationwide car," she said. "And as far as the Cup car, I just want to finish. I just want to finish, which is going to be a challenge I think."

[Jay Busbee: Danica Patrick deserved punishment for wrecking Hornish Jr.]

Other drivers have sympathy for Patrick in her initial run at Darlington, which Dale Earnhardt Jr. called "one of the toughest tracks that we run on. I think it's great for her to come here and get that experience early for a full season next year ... Only a very few drivers come in here for their first time and really walk away with a successful weekend. Most drivers that come here for the first time do struggle, so I wouldn't be too concerned if I was her if she didn't get the results that she was expecting. This is a place that you have to learn the ropes and pay your dues or it will jump out and get you when you least expect it."

Patrick's lessons begin Friday night in the Nationwide race. Any bets on how long she'll last?

Carroll Shelby

Carroll Shelby has passed away at the age of 89. The legendary tuner and proprietor of the famous marque that bears his name had been in the hospital for several weeks, suffering from pneumonia. Shelby addressed his fans fourteen days before his death, saying that he was resting comfortably and being taken care of by his children.

Anyone familiar in the least with automotive history is well aware of Shelby's vast vehicular exploits, so we'll just touch on them here. Carroll was a successful race car driver in the 1950s before creating his own racing team to take on the likes of Ferrari, using Ford-powered sportscar called the Cobra. Suffice it to say, Shelby and his Cobra were extremely successful. Later, Shelby's name would become synonymous with the fastest and most powerful Ford Mustang models ever created.

Shelby is survived by his three children Patrick, Michael and Sharon, his sister Anne Shelby Ellison of Fort Worth and his wife Cleo. An official press release can be found below.

Vergne: FR3.5 stronger than GP2

Jean-Eric Vergne has hailed this year's Formula Renault 3.5 line-up as the strongest outside of Formula 1. The Toro Rosso driver, who graduated to Formula 1 after racing in the Renault-backed series last year, believes that the championship has stepped up a level for 2012 with a new car and an influx of drivers from all over the junior racing ladder.

Video: Ferrari dealership in trouble for burning rubber on the Great Wall of China

Ferrari 458 on Great Wall

Ferrari is not an outfit that would miss out on the enormous opportunity presented by the Chinese market. Having won the grand prix there three times out of the first four it was held, the Prancing Horse marque launched a special-edition 599 there in 2009, followed by an even more exclusive porcelain-finish one-off.

For 2012, Ferrari created a special-edition 458 Italia to mark the year of the dragon, and to launch it, the local dealership in Nanjing rented out a section of the Great Wall. It's what they did with it, however, that has local authorities seeing red in more ways than one.

Apparently at some point during or after the demonstration, an employee of the dealership got behind the wheel of the limited-edition V8 supercar and pulled some smokey donuts. The problem is that the stunt left tire marks burnt into the ancient surface, leaving authorities understandably upset. What repercussions will ensue remains to be seen, but we certainly wouldn't want to be ticking off China's notoriously strict government.

Scroll down below for the video report.

Video: MotoMan at Targa Newfoundland, Part Two

MotoMan at Targa Newfoundland Part 2

The crew at MotoMan has rolled out the second episode of its Targa Newfoundland coverage. This time around, Brandon Fitch and I spend plenty of time talking with the guys about the challenges of Day One, how the Flyin' Miata supercharged NC MX-5 Miata handles some of the more technical stages and joy of hauling ass through a subdivision. Meanwhile, team MotoMan gets a few valuable lessons on competition in targa from veterans of the race like Rob Pacione and learns a little about Newfoundland hospitality at the same time. As the week continues, competitors are forced to overcome a variety of challenges, from an entire engine swap in a Lotus to a water-logged 911.

Part Two gives us all a better idea of what it's like to compete in Grand Touring, where the goal is to hit a specific time and speed, rather than simply beat a time like in Targa class. Both competitions are challenging in their own right, but we have to sympathize with MotoMan's frustration at being forced to limp a Dodge Challenger 392 along at 40 miles per hour with an open road ahead of you. Scroll down to check it out for yourself.

Report: Toyota to best GM's profit

Toyota logoToyota has had some recent setbacks, what with last year's natural disasters and its lengthy recall problems. But according to Bloomberg, the carmaker is back on track, and is expected to post its largest profit in five years. Toyota reports financial results for its fiscal year tomorrow, and is expected to have a $10 billion net income, which would put Toyota ahead of General Motors in earnings, according to the report.

The Japanese automaker is expected to forecast a 12 percent sales growth for next year, which would make it the largest global carmaker by revenue, though Volkswagen is expected to lead in earnings. Bloomberg reports that Toyota's 2012 calendar year sales are expected to increase 21 percent, to 9.58 million units, which would be a record for the automaker. Toyota shares on the Tokyo stock exchange are up 22 percent for the year.

Crewman chases loose tire, gets chewed out

You've got to be a special breed of cat to be a NASCAR pit crew member. A little fearlessness, a little derring-do, a little insanity all help. But one thing you can't have is a little stupidity, and Paul Menard's tire changer edged right up to that line in Saturday night's Capital City 400 in Richmond on Saturday night. Dedication is great, but dedication isn't much protection against a car speeding around a turn on pit road. Thankfully, the tire changer escaped any unwanted encounters with vehicles, but he couldn't escape the wrath of either the NASCAR official or his own crew chief, who threatened the job of anyone who did anything like that again.

Remember, folks: playing in traffic never ends well for anyone.
