Presenting your 2013 NASCAR Hall of Fame Class

The 2013 inductees to the NASCAR Hall of Fame were decided on Wednesday, and making the cut were Buck Baker, Cotton Owens, Herb Thomas, Rusty Wallace and Leonard Wood.

Thomas and Wood tied with 57 percent of the vote. Wallace, the driver with 55 Sprint Cup wins who is now an analyst for ESPN's NASCAR coverage, got 52 percent of the vote. Owens had 50, and Baker and Fireball Roberts had the first tie of the first three Hall of Fame voting sessions with 39 percent.

That necessitated a re-vote for the final spot, which Baker got. The five will be inducted on February 8.

Current NASCAR team owners Rick Hendrick and Richard Childress were both on the ballot, but neither were in the top eight in the voting.

Baker: Baker won 46 races and 45 poles during his driving career which was from 1949-1976. He was the first driver to win consecutive NASCAR championships.

Owens: Owens won 9 races as a driver, including the first NASCAR win for Pontiac, and 38 races as an owner. He and NASCAR Hall of Famer David Pearson won 27 races together.

Thomas: While Baker was the first to win back-to-back NASCAR titles, Thomas was the first two-time champion, winning in 1952 and 1954. He won 48 times in 228 starts from 1949-1962.

Wallace: The 1989 champion and current NASCAR analyst for ESPN, Wallace won 55 races from 1980-2005.

Wood: Half of the legendary Wood Brothers, who inspired the modern pit crew, Leonard Wood was the team's chief mechanic. Glen Wood was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame earlier in 2012.

Brad Keselowski spins Tony Stewart, then offers a desperate apology

Tony Stewart carries a certain don't-mess-with-the-bull aura that's pretty freaking intimidating, mostly because if you do you'll get the horns.

So when Brad Keselowski spun Stewart on pit road in the middle of the Coca-Cola 600, there was a reason for the desperation in Keselowski's voice as he radioed his spotter to relay an apology to the defending champ. It's the same reason why he grew irritated with said spotter for telling him to relax and not worry about Stewart: you don't relax and not worry about Stewart unless you don't care about payback.

For years, Stewart has been the closest thing the Cup Series has had to Dale Earnhardt Sr. since Senior's death in 2001. Quick witted off the track and badge-carrying cop on it, Stewart almost always gets the better of whoever he's going up against. Keselowski is smart enough to know this; smart enough to know that an angry Stewart is a liability, and when you're battling for a championship, you don't need a liability, real or perceived.

And so he was adamant that his spotter relay an apology to Stewart, letting him know that he didn't even see him when he ran into him on pit road.

"He took the blame for it but I thought it was my fault," Keselowski said afterward. "It's one of those deals where you're coming in and going out; it's like being in a Wal-Mart parking lot and you're both going for the same parking spot and sometimes things happen."

This is a power Smoke has and it's something worth noting. His competition, some of them anyway, fear being on his bad side, which can only work in his favor. When you know they care about what you think, then you clearly can get inside their head whenever you want. It's what Kevin Harvick did to Denny Hamlin a few years ago and it worked.

Stewart's smart. No need to ruff up Keselowski now. But bet on the three-time champ putting this incident in his back pocket, ready to pull it out whenever it'll serve a purpose. And when he does, it won't be because he'll be holding a grudge, but because it's an edge Keselowski just gave him.

Vergne: Tyre stop was unavoidable

Jean-Eric Vergne said he was forced to pit for new tyres near the end of the Monaco Grand Prix because the Pirellis he was using were simply too worn out, rather than because Toro Rosso was gambling on rain. The Frenchman was running strongly in seventh position in his first Formula 1 race in Monaco when he pitted for intermediate tyres with just six laps to go.

Kurt Busch tells his side of the story, but is anyone buying it?

On Friday afternoon, Kurt Busch told his side of the Darlington story ? you know, the one where he burned out through the pit stall of Ryan Newman, nearly pancaking his crew, and later ran into Newman's car on pit road. And he offered several perspectives that, on paper (or onscreen, whatever), sound reasonable enough:

? Regarding the idea that Busch tried to run over members of Newman's crew, whether intentionally or not: "Newman left his pit stall a good 10 seconds before I did, and I didn't think there was any reason to think crew guys were in danger," Busch said. "One guy has a problem with it, and it escalated from there." Busch noted that he was trying to beat the pace car to avoid going a lap down, which is a perfectly logical reason for speeding out of a pit box.

? Busch noted that both he and Newman would be battling for the same potential jobs as free agents in a few months, but declined to comment on the idea that Newman might be trying to paint him black in front of future owners.

? While Busch did not apologize to Newman's crew, he gave a curious apology to NASCAR itself: "I apologize to NASCAR for them to have to make a decision on penalizing me."

? The best line: Busch took issue with Newman calling him a liar and "chemically imbalanced," and noted that Newman "needs to check his trophy case on that Daytona 500 trophy that I helped him get years ago."

Sure, it all sounds very reasonable. Could in fact be the straight truth, or at least the truth as Busch himself sees it. But if you're going to believe a story different from your own, you need to give at least some credence to the other side, and Busch has pretty much used up all his goodwill with drivers, officials, sponsors, many fans and the media.

The idea that he wasn't pursuing any kind of aggressive agenda just minutes after the most unhinged on-air rant since Mel Gibson strains credibility, to put it mildly. Busch himself admitted as much when he acknowledged that his "strike zone" is larger than that of other drivers. And for that, he can point the finger in an awful lot of directions, but it always needs to come back to him.

Busch ended the interview after just eight minutes, referencing the pro wrestling/entertainment side of NASCAR on several occasions. It's a dangerous game of speak-your-mind, damn-the-consequences he's playing here, one that could determine his future career prospects.

Busch set his personality-rehab cause back months at Darlington; he's now got work to do once again to convince future owners he's worth a shot. Can he do it? Sure, but as before, it's all on his shoulders. Nobody else's. And it's likely few will be going out of their way to make life easier for him, either.

Danica's 600 part of learning process

Danica Patrick didn't have the best of nights in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Coca-Cola 600 Sunday.

She dealt with nearly brushing the wall and fought to match the pace of the leaders throughout the 600. In the end, she finished 30th, five laps off the pace.

After the race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, the longest of her career and one which came a day after she raced 300 miles at the track in the Nationwide Series, finishing 13th, Patrick summarized her race.

"We had a lot of green-flag running, and for me as a driver in general in NASCAR, but especially as a new driver in the Cup series, that hurts me," Patrick said. "Those long runs hurt me. I'm just not great at making the best out of a car that's not perfect, and those long runs really show that. But that's what you get in Cup. You get a lot of green-flag running and I've got to learn how to deal with that.

"But that's just the nature of where I'm at on the learning curve at this point in time. We brought the GoDaddy car home and one of the goals was to finish. I would have liked to have been a little faster overall, but I think there were some times in there when it was decent. It was kind of like Darlington (where) there was a certain run or two that felt really good and everything else, you're just kind of like 'let's work on this and let's work on that.'"

After being questioned all week about the impact the longer race could have, Patrick found that there really wasn't that much different for her.

Making only her third Cup start, after finishes of 38th at the Daytona 500 and 31st at the Southern 500 in the first two outings, and in the midst of her first full season of Nationwide competition, Patrick still is learning.

Perhaps she learned that a 600-mile race isn't as intimidating as it might sound.

"You don't really notice that extra 100 miles," she said, adding with a laugh, "you just notice that you're going five or six hundred miles. Actually I feel better getting out of the car right now than did even in the Nationwide race yesterday. The sun goes down and it cools off and it feels really good. And I feel good."

She says that she came close to hitting the wall, but didn't. Her car did have some damage, though, after contact from Regan Smith midway through the race.

Still, Patrick seemed to take it all in stride and just view this race as yet another opportunity to learn as she continues to break into NASCAR's top tier.

"I just missed the wall," Patrick said. "One time I got hit in (Turns) 3 and 4 and got pretty close to the wall but missed it. Another time I was just working with the high line because I just took it as time that I'm not running great, so like, let's just take this time where I'm not running hard for position to explore and work on the high line. It just seemed like I worked on the high line at probably the wrong time for the car because that was pretty loose on that run. When I went back down to the bottom after getting loose in (Turns) 1 and 2, I realized how loose I really was.

"It was probably not the right time. But it was still good experience for me and that's what this is all about. When Tony (Stewart) picked the schedule, it was to pick the most difficult races of the year, and this one definitely has a lot of attrition and the track changes a lot and you've got to keep up with that."

Patrick's cars are prepared by Stewart-Haas Racing, a team that struggled throughout Sunday night. Stewart didn't have a great night, spinning on pit road after contact with Brad Keselowski when he already was a little off the pace, and finished 25th. Teammate Ryan Newman finished 14th.

Drivers expecting hottest ever Indy

IndyCar drivers are preparing for what could be the hottest Indy 500 on record, with temperatures of 35.C forecast for today's race. Currently, the warmest Indy 500 in history was in 1937, when Wilbur Shaw withstood 33.8.C to take his victory, however reigning series champion Dario Franchitti believes that the conditions will pose more of a problem for the crews than the drivers. "The forecast is in the mid-90s [mid-30s celsius]," said the Ganassi driver
