NASCAR Hall of Fame selection Cotton Owens passes away

Cotton Owens, who was recently voted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame, has died after a battle with cancer. He was 88.

Owens found success both as a driver and an owner. He scored Pontiac's first NASCAR victory in 1957 and as an owner he hired Junior Johnson, and later, David Pearson. Pearson won 27 races driving for Owens, as well as the 1966 season championship.

In 1970, Buddy Baker was the first driver to break 200 MPH in a NASCAR event when he did it at Talladega in Owens' car.

Our condolences go out to the Owens family. Owens will be officially enshrined in the NASCAR Hall of Fame on February 8.

Carl Edwards: Infected by the NAPA Know-How song just like the rest of us

Carl Edwards gave us an interesting revelation at Charlotte Media Day: when he's behind Martin Truex Jr., he starts singing the "NAPA Know-How" song just like the rest of us. And if you know that song, and everyone who's heard it once does, you know it worms its way into your subconscious, wrapping itself around your cerebral cortex waiting to pop out and make you sing it at inopportune times: your wedding, a funeral, driving around a track at 200 mph.

Here's my question, though: we're most often subjected to this ad while we're watching the race. During that time, shouldn't Carl be, you know, racing? Unless he's got a TV feed in his car, which would explain a lot.

Tarquini claims Algarve pole

Lukoil Racing's Gabriele Tarquini claimed his second World Touring Car Championship pole position of the season at the Algarve. The Italian had earlier dominated free practice one, but feared a factory Chevrolet resurgence in qualifying. The expected threat failed to materialise however, with the 2009 WTCC champion emerging fastest in both Q1 and Q2 and edging out Chevrolet's championship leader Yvan Muller by 0.266s in the decisive second qualifying session.

Robby Gordon?s Stadium Super Trucks Series: Awesome thing or awesomest thing?

We haven't seen Robby Gordon much around the ol' track this year, and this is a major reason why: he's launching Robby Gordon's Stadium Super Trucks Series in 2013. It's a whole new offroading experience: offroading in a stadium. (What? There aren't any roads in a stadium.)

"Stadium racing helped Jimmie Johnson, Casey Mears and myself launch our careers," Gordon said in a promotional stop this week. "SST offers attractive racing venues, remarkable track designs, substantial purse, and opportunity for network TV a lot like NASCAR because you can visualize the whole track."

The series will kick off next year with a 10-race slate to include stops in Los Angeles and San Diego. Each race will be a two-day event, featuring qualifying, heat racing and showdowns as the sun sets on Saturday night. Both Bigfoot trucks and SSTs, featuring stock parts and 600-hp engines, will race in various events. Drivers will draw numbers at each track, so they won't race the same truck each race.

Gordon noted that each race will have a $60,000 purse, with money going to the top 3 finishers, and the overall series champion will pocket a cool $500,000.

With its fan-friendly angle, SST is clearly looking to fill the "NASCAR doesn't care about us" niche in the hearts of racing fans. And given Gordon's perpetual outsider status, he could well be onto something. Starting a new race series in this economic climate seems borderline insane, but then "borderline insane" could be the title of Gordon's biography. We'll be watching this one closely.

Jimmie Johnson hammers down a defining Dover victory

All right, conspiracy theorists, let's get this out of the way:

? Jimmie Johnson cheats.

? Crew chief Chad Knaus cheats.

? Team owner Rick Hendrick cheats.

? NASCAR allows any or all of the above to cheat.

? NASCAR was better back when and Jimmie is boring and now it's NAPCAR/CRAPCAR/NA$CAR and I promise I really am done this time and I'm never coming back...

That about cover it? Happy now? Good. Now scoot on off and let the rest of us appreciate the continuation of one of the most dominating careers not just in NASCAR, but in sports as a whole.

On a day where the much-beleaguered Tiger Woods won once again, Jimmie Johnson, the man whose athletic feats are the closest analogue to Tiger's, returned to victory lane in Dover at the FedEx 400 Benefitting Autism Speaks. It wasn't even close.

Johnson had a perfectly tuned car, a flawless pit strategy, and only one rival: teammate Jeff Gordon. Once Gordon had problems and dropped back, it was all Jimmie, all the time. With his seventh victory at Dover, Johnson now matches Richard Petty and Bobby Allison for the most all-time at the track.

After waiting for so long to get his 200th win, Hendrick has now seen his cars win three straight races (five if you consider the All-Star race). And while Tony Stewart did break Johnson's five-Cup streak last fall, it's clear that Johnson has several more in his sights ... even if he's not willing to admit it.

[Related: NASCAR's wreckless drought ends with 13-car pileup at Dover]

"It's just way too early to talk championship," Johnson said. "I mean, we are doing the things right now that will win one, but we need to do this in September. ... When you look at what Tony and Carl went through last year, that's a perfect example. You just don't show up and think everything is going to turn out as you hoped. You have to get in there and race hard for all ten races."

The angriest guy at the track had to be Jeff Gordon, who saw his chances for a win vanish with the wave of a controversial debris-caution flag. "I can't wait to see that debris on TV," he said. "I'd like to see it because I certainly never saw it [out on the track]. I'm not going to make any comments until I see what they're reasoning for it was. I don't know who you blame if there really wasn't much out there because all the media has been talking about all week long is oh, there's no cautions, there's no cautions. It used to be debris cautions. So, who do you blame that on?" He's got a point, although it's not just the media pointing out the lack of caution flags. Still, had he been able to stay at the front, he would have been able to challenge Johnson.

Or perhaps not; he was missing a key element. After the race, Johnson gave credit where credit was due: the rainbow wig he was wearing to promote Madagascar 3.

"I'm just proud of this hair," Johnson said. "The hair really brought some speed to the team."

Hey, it's at least as believable as any conspiracy.
