Amendment to ban military sports sponsorship doesn?t pass U.S. House
The amendment to the 2013 defense spending bill that would have prohibited military branches from sports sponsorship didn't pass in the House of Representatives Wednesday night.
The amendment, which was sponsored by Rep. Betty McCollum (D, MN) and Rep. Jack Kingston (R, GA), fell 216-202. It would have cut more than $72 million from the proposed $608 billion bill. Supporters of the amendment argued that the return on the investment from sponsorships like on Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s car doesn't match the investment.
Racing would have been the sport most heavily affected by the cuts. Earnhardt and IndyCar Series driver JR Hildebrand are sponsored by the National Guard and NHRA driver Tony Schumacher is sponsored by the US Army. Ryan Newman is currently sponsored by the Army in the Cup Series, but the Army previously announced that it wouldn't be returning in 2013. The vote does not affect the Army's decision to leave the Sprint Cup Series, and it also said that it would be staying in the NHRA.
It was the third time that an amendment to ban sports sponsorships has been presented and defeated. However, the vote has gotten closer the last two times, so there's a fair chance that we'll see similar arguments in the near future, perhaps even on the next defense spending bill. Report: Toyota sales rebound to reclaim spot as world's largest automaker

Toyota has pushed ahead of General Motors and Volkswagen as the world's largest automaker in the first half of 2012.
According to a new Bloomberg report, the 4.9 million units sold by the Japanese automaker in the first six months of 2012 represents an impressive 34-percent jump. Toyota's sales beat out GM by 300,000 units and VW by 520,000.
Still, The General's sales were up 2.9 percent to 4.67 million vehicles sold, while Volkswagen moved 4.45 units, an 8.9 percent increase. While Toyota has enjoyed success in its top markets, North America and Japan, GM and VW have struggled with the economic crisis in Europe.
The Japanese automaker was able to accomplish this even in the wake of the disastrous tsunami in its home market and flooding that occurred in Thailand. According to IHS Automotive market analyst Rebecca Lindland, the strong start may be followed by a downturn in momentum: "they are still restocking dealerships, pulling in consumers who may have waited... but that positive impact will trail off as the year progresses."
Toyota previously took the top spot as the largest global automaker from GM back in 2008 amidst the American financial crisis, but General Motors reclaimed that title in the wake of Japan's natural disasters.

Will Power breaks out the double middle finger salute again; this time towards EJ Viso
Very rarely is a sequel more subtle than its precursor. Very rarely is a sequel organic. And Will Power, yours was both during Saturday night's Izod IndyCar Series race at Iowa Speedway and we thank you for it.
Last summer at New Hampshire, Power became somewhat of a sensation for his double middle finger salute towards IndyCar officials after the series tried to finish the race under green on a damp track, causing a major pileup. Power flipped them again on Saturday, giving E.J. Viso the treatment in response to Viso's gesture towards him.
Power and Viso had just made contact in turn one, as Viso was on the inside of Power. The contact sent Power around and both drivers into the wall, with Viso's car ahead of Power's. As TV cameras were focused on Power, he flipped up his visor, unhooked his steering wheel and BAM, the double barrel salute subtly appeared. And then it disappeared. In fact, if you rewound your DVR, you may have had a hard time finding it. It existed for just a couple frames.
Viso's car ended up ahead of Power's on the track. It wasn't visible in the initial camera shot, but on replay, when Viso climbed from his car he gestured toward Power while pointing at his helmet, intimating that Power needed to use his head. Power responded with his trademark, and then Viso got the last motion with a gesture towards, uh, down there. (After he emerged from the infield care center, Power said he had simply lost the car, and then after looking at replays, apologized to Viso for not seeing him on the inside.)
Will, you're now the master of the exuberant and the low-key double bird flipping, perhaps the best road racer in the IndyCar Series and you can extinguish your own engine fire. Don't stop being you.

Two drivers injured in practices for X Games RallyCross event
Practicing for RallyCross during this summer's X Games is proving to be a very dangerous, uh, practice.
The RallyCross track in Los Angeles has received lots of publicity for its life-size orange Hot Wheels loop, but two drivers have been taken to the hospital after crashes that didn't involve the loop. (The loop was used for a world record stunt Saturday. It's not part of the regular course.)
On Friday, Toomas Hekkinen (in the video above) was making a ramp jump and wasn't carrying enough speed. Because of that, his car crashed head on into the landing ramp and landed on the ground below upside down. Hekkinen fractured his left ankle.
Saturday, Marcus Gr�nholm was knocked unconscious and taken to the hospital after crashing. Gr�nholm had safely navigated a ramp jump and looked to be arcing out for the next turn and hit the base of a lightpole with the left-front side of his car. According to X Games officials, Gr�nholm is awake and alert and was undergoing further tests.
The X Games event is the third of five on the 2012 Global RallyCross schedule.

Muller still on top in practice two
World Touring Car Championship points leader Yvan Muller repeated his free practice one form to top the second free practice session at Curitiba. The Frenchman recorded a fastest time of 1m21.124s two thirds of the way into the session, half a second slower than his earlier best set when track temperatures were cooler.

Report: Seinfeld premiers new show with VW Bug and Larry David

"Larry Eats A Pancake"
That's the title of the first episode of Jerry Seinfeld's "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee," which features a 1952 Volkswagen Beetle and long-time Seinfeld friend, Larry David. The web series episode premiered on Sony's Crackle.com Thursday night and can be seen on the website ComediansInCarsGettingCoffee.com.
The Bug is beautifully restored and there are lots of shots of it looking out of place on the roads of Los Angeles throughout the 13-minute video. Seinfeld sums up the 25-horsepower car perfectly, "And if like me, you believe true humility is always in short supply, this is the car for you."
There's also a funny bit when Seinfeld pulls up next to a Bugatti Veyron and points out both are made by Volkswagen.
Really, the car is secondary character this show, as Seinfeld and David trade thoughts on the car, being Jewish and eating pancakes. But the project also appears to be something of a passion for Seinfeld or at least a way for him to get into vintage vehicles. There are no commercials.
The next episode will premiere on August 2 and feature Seinfeld and Ricky Gervais cruising around in an Austin Healey. Check out the video and the preview on the website ComediansInCarsGettingCoffee.com.

Button quickest in rain-hit first practice
Jenson Button set the pace in the first free practice session for the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim as McLaren used its updated MP4-27 on track for the first time. The Briton's 1m16.595s lap was 0.498s faster than his team-mate Lewis Hamilton, with championship leader Fernando Alonso third on the timesheets for Ferrari. Intermittent rain showers rendered times fairly irrelevant in terms of determining form, with teams frequently having to cut short evaluation runs for the updates they have brought to Germany.
