Todd Bodine revives the lost art of the helmet throw at Pocono

NASCAR needed a good old fashioned helmet throw and Todd Bodine obliged during Sunday's Camping World Truck Series race at Pocono.

While trying to chase down leader James Buescher after a restart, Bodine made contact with Nelson Piquet Jr. on the Long Pond Straight off of turn one and crashed hard into the tire barrier. After climbing out of his car, Bodine chucked his helmet toward's Piquet's truck as he drove by under caution... and missed.

Upon further review of the instant replay, well, it's hard to see how Bodine's anger is appropriate. He moved to the inside while he wasn't clear of Piquet's truck. When he emerged from the infield care center, he didn't repent for the helmet toss.

"I'll take the blame for that whole thing just because I should have known better than to trust an idiot to do the right thing," Bodine said. "You know, I pulled down to draft off of James and I should have known Nelson wasn't smart enough to pull over with me and sidedraft me."

"If it was the last lap of the race I can see that ? he thinks he owes me one anyway from Kansas, I think it was. But it's a shame, we had a good truck."

Strong words, even though the anger looks to be misplaced. If Piquet had read Bodine's mind and pulled to the inside as well, he might have taken out Bodine's teammate Timothy Peters, who was to the inside of Piquet. How smart would that have been?

Anyway, we got a helmet toss, even if it didn't hit the bullseye. Huzzah!

Video: Crazy woman tightrope walks between two moving semis to sell Volvo Trucks

We can think of plenty of good uses for long stretches of empty highway under construction, but performing a death-defying tightrope stunt between two semis is nowhere on our list. Now this isn't just any regular stunt, as Volvo Trucks enlisted world record-holding funambulist Faith Dickey and Hollywood stunt coordinator Peter Pedrero to come up with a video that helps shows off the "precision and control" of its new FH series semi trucks. (Yes, even truck companies are now trying to use viral videos to peddle their wares.)

It wouldn't be an exciting video if she walked a tightrope between the trucks as they were sitting still, and it obviously still wasn't good enough to film the stunt with the trucks simply driving on a flat, boring airport runway. Instead, the trucks are cruising down a deserted stretch of highway in Croatia barreling toward a divided tunnel in a mountain face at just under 80 km/h (close to 50 mph). Dickey is wearing a safety cable in case she falls off during the stunt, but with each truck heading into a separate tunnel, the tether won't help much if the rope breaks.

While you're watching the video below to see how Dickey and the new Volvo Trucks perform, we'll be on the phone with the passenger car side of Volvo to see if we can spend some time on this same Croatian stretch of road with a Polestar-tuned S60.

Carl Edwards returns to Nationwide at Watkins Glen

Carl Edwards is coming back to Nationwide.

Earlier this year, with the pain of a Cup lost on a tiebreaker still fresh on his mind, Carl Edwards declared he would no longer run in the Nationwide series. It was a surprising announcement given that Edwards had successfully doubled up full-time rides in both Sprint and Nationwide since 2005.

The prevailing theory, of course, was that Edwards would be spending more time zeroing in on his Sprint Cup career without the "distraction" of a Nationwide career. Even so, he managed to win a championship and placed in the top three every single year he ran Nationwide. Last year, with Sprint Cup drivers barred from winning the championship, he nonetheless managed eight wins and 23 top-5s in 33 events.

But the solo-Cup adventure hasn't quite worked out so well. Edwards sits 11th in points, but with no wins to his credit is in very real danger of missing the Chase entirely.

Could the added preparation that comes from running a race on Saturday help him on Sunday? We'll find out at Watkins Glen, where Edwards plans to return to the track in the No. 60 Subway Ford.

"The Nationwide race at Watkins Glen is almost like a Sprint Cup event because of the length of the race," Edwards said in a release. "It's a very long and tough race, and there is a lot of competition with all the road-course specialists."

Whether this comes too late to turn Edwards' season around, we can't know. Either way, it'll give him better preparation for the Sunday race and, perhaps, pave the way for a return to the Chase. Once in the Chase, anything can happen ... as Edwards knows all too well.

Jeff Gordon takes rain-shortened Pocono, vaults into Chase competition

Even for a sport built on conspiracy and back-room dealing, Sunday's Pocono race was an all-timer. You had Jimmie Johnson, fastest car in the field, "mysteriously" losing grip and taking out not just himself but Roush Fenway drivers Matt Kenseth and Greg Biffle, as well as Pocono master Denny Hamlin. End result? Dale Earnhardt Jr. holds onto the points lead. Then you had rain coming at exactly the moment Jeff Gordon took the lead ... yeah, that's just too much of a coincidence.

Or, you know, maybe things just broke that way, and Jeff Gordon was the lucky guy in the right place at the right time. You believe what you want to believe.

Jeff Gordon is the third-winningest driver in NASCAR history, so he doesn't have to make any excuses for anything. But thanks to Mother Nature and (indirectly) Johnson, he snagged one of the most critical wins of his career, a victory that put him from embarrassing underachiever to Chase hopeful in one rainy stroke.

[Related: Ten fans injured by lightning after Pocono race]

Gordon ran a solid race but not a spectacular one, staying within sight of the leaders all afternoon long on a day that both began late and ended early because of rain. And when it became apparent that the race not only wouldn't go the distance, but would likely be over within minutes, Gordon and his team put themselves in a position to challenge for the lead.

Would the 24 have reached the front had Johnson not taken out Kenseth? Doubtful. Clean air was king at a rain-smoothed Pocono, and Hamlin, Johnson and Earnhardt all put multiple-second leads on the field whenever they got out in front.

Still, a win is a win, and this one allowed Gordon to leapfrog three (four, if you count still-winless Carl Edwards) one-win drivers and hold, at least for a week, the second wild card spot behind Kasey Kahne.

"God, I'm so excited!" Gordon said just after the race. "Don't count us out. Don't count us out."

Oh, one other thing: Saturday was Jeff Gordon's birthday, and Sunday was crew chief Alan Gustafson's. Nice birthday present, NASCAR. Coincidence? We think not!

ETC: Dacia Duster limousine an ambitious student project [w/video]

The Dacia Duster catches a lot of ire from the the Top Gear boys, but the work of 23 students could (but probably won't) put an end to that. The students are part of Dacia's Engineering Projects Auto Program, and have gone about creating a stretched Dacia Duster.

The team started by cutting the Romanian crossover and adding 59 inches of sheet metal. The result is an Eastern European ute that stretches over 19 feet long!

The Duster is painted in a matte black finish, and the exterior design is capped off with some sort of aluminum side thingy. In the midst of all this customization, the stock wheels were sensibly kept intact.

The cabin has been fitted a television, four captains chairs and an Android tablet. Other interior touches include expansive sunroofs, track lighting and generous heaps of leather.

Check out the fruits of the students' labor in the gallery and check out the video of the stretch-Duster below.

Chevrolet to debut Camaro in 2013 Nationwide series

Here's a pleasant surprise: Chevrolet will roll out the Camaro for competition in the Nationwide Series, starting in 2013. It makes sense; not only is the Camaro the top-selling sports car in America (per Chevy), it's also a strong competitor to the Ford Mustang in the Nationwide Series.

And now, some corporatespeak: "Chevrolet is proud to bring the Camaro to the NASCAR Nationwide Series in 2013," said Jim Campbell, vice president, Chevrolet Performance Vehicles and Motorsports. "The Camaro Nationwide race car incorporates many of the distinctive styling elements of the production Camaro, including the unique power-bulge hood and deep recessed grille. In addition, the design incorporates the distinctive halo light rings and dual-port grille appearances, and the gold bowtie." ("Power-bulge" is my new favorite adjective.)

As Chevy PR notes, Chevy leads the Nationwide series in wins, manufacturer standings and driver points standings. And now it's going to look even better in 2013.

Video: Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series caught on the 'Ring

Th unveiling of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series isn't that far off. Prototypes have been popping up in spy photographers' image banks for a while, now we have some video of the hardest SLS AMG the street-legal world will ever know.

The specification remains a mystery, though, even down to what engine will find its way tucked well back under that long hood. The money seems to be on a last hurrah for the 6.2-liter V8, uprated to something beyond 600 horsepower from its current 563 through engineering and not forced induction. A report in Car and Driver predicts the Black Series will lose 100 or so pounds and get strengthened running gear to cope, along with the usual fare that makes every Black Series a volcanically hard performance tool.

Scroll down for a look at the videos and to hear the sound through its quad pipes.

Video: Jaguar F-Type gets worked out at speed

Jaguar wants us all to know that it is hard at work on the new F-Type. Engineers have been busily wringing the convertible out over a test course ahead of its debut at this year's Paris Motor Show. We know that the new convertible will be offered with a pair of supercharged power plants, in both 3.0-liter V6 and 5.0-liter V8 variants. The six-cylinder should be good for up to 375 horsepower, though the video below promises appropriate power to weight and torque to weight ratios.

The company seems focused on serving up a rigid chassis stitched from lightweight components, too. Those are all wins in our book. An eight-speed automatic transmission will likely handle shifting duties, and Jaguar has hinted that a hardtop version of the sports car will make its way to production as well. Check out the new teaser clip below.

Paul Pittman flips his car in first NHRA Pro Stock start

Paul Pittman's first NHRA start also became his first NHRA flip.

In the first round of Sunday's Pro Stock division at the Mile High Nationals at Bandimere Speedway in Colorado, Pittman's car ? one he built himself -- started to drift towards the center line as he headed towards the finish line against top seed Allen Johnson.

As he moved to correct, the car turned sideways as it crossed the finish line and flipped over. Thankfully, it landed on its wheels after just one rotation, but then Pittman slammed into the wall twice after grazing it and catching on fire after the final impact. Pittman was unhurt, and thanked the NHRA's rules for being able to climb out of the car unscathed.

"Well, just pretty bad about the car, that's what I feel bad about. My wife was pretty excited? but I tried not to hit the cones," Pittman said after his crash. "I felt it get a little fishy on me and I just started towards the cones and I tried to go correct it so I wouldn't hit a cone and next thing I know (the car) started washing back and forth and then the next thing she went upside down and then I saw that wall coming and I said 'Man, this is going to be a big hit' because we were going at a big clip anyways, I don't know."

"And I hit the wall, after I hit the wall then I said "Oh, well, got by that' and then it slid over and it went to the other wall and I said 'well, hold on for that one.' Because it doesn't look good either. The second impact wasn't as strong as the first. "

"But all the safety equipment, all of NHRA's rules that everybody complains and bitch about is the reason I'm standing here right now."

Kyle Busch?s Wild Card chances take a hit after problems at Pocono

Kyle Busch's wild card chances dimmed when he hit the wall on Lap 19 of Sunday's Pennsylvania 400 at Pocono. After climbing from 20th to 10th, Busch had a part failure in the rear of the car that flattened the left-rear tire and he pancaked the Turn 1 wall.

"Just disintegrated a rear brake rotor and blew through the caliper after that, so going down into Turn 1, the fastest part of the racetrack and you have three wheel brakes it ain't too much fun," Busch said.

"But, just the way our year's been going. It's kind of our luck. I hate it for all these guys, everybody at M&Ms, but what do you do?"

When Busch had made those comments, his main competition for the second wildcard position were still Joey Logano and Ryan Newman, the other two drivers with a win between 11th and 20th in the standings. After the checkered flag flew, Jeff Gordon joined them in the one-win category, and for the time being, leapfrogged Busch, Logano and Newman for the final wild card spot.

Because of his ability to reel off wins in bunches, Busch has been considered to be the favorite for that second spot for some time. And despite myriad of parts failures, had been able to cling to the position. Now, after yet another mechanical miscue, he's on the outside looking in with five races to go.

After reeling off four straight top fives from Richmond to Charlotte, Busch hadn't finished any higher than 10th in seven races before last week's second place at Indianapolis, a finish that vaulted him to 11th in the points standings. However, Sunday's 33rd-place finish canceled it out and Busch is now 15th, 12 points behind both Gordon and Newman and 24 points ahead of Logano.

While Busch may not have seemed to optimistic after climbing out of the car on Sunday ? his comments sounded quite Tony Stewart-ish from Michigan of last year ? all isn't certainly lost, especially if the team doesn't have any reliability issues in the next five weeks. But now he's behind not one, but two direct competitors for the final Chase position.
