After winning at Pocono in August, Jeff Gordon finished 21st and 28th the next two weeks. Not exactly the best way to follow up a Wild Card contending win.
But over the final three weeks of the NASCAR regular season, Gordon closed with a flourish with finishes of third, second and second, flipping the narrative of his season from "can he make the Chase?" to now "can he win the Chase?"
The answer to the latter, of course, is yes. Gordon has had capable cars all season long. But it also comes with the caveat that this is Jeff Gordon's 2012. Anything can, and has, happened.
There was the blown engine at Daytona, the cut tire with Dale Earnhardt Jr. at Bristol, a crash at Talladega after starting on the pole, troubles at Darlington. Yeah, you get the drift.
But all of those issues came in the first 11 races of the season, after which Gordon stood 23rd in the Sprint Cup points standings. Since then, Gordon finished on the lead lap all but once, and that was at Michigan during the great Hendrick engine epidemic of 2012.
Best Chase Track: Gordon was king at Martinsville before Jimmie Johnson and Denny Hamlin challenged his throne, and is still pretty damn good there, with seven wins and 31 top 10s in 39 starts. From the first race of 2003 to the first race of 2010, Gordon didn't finish outside of the top 10.
Worst Chase Track: It's either Talladega or Texas. Gordon's Talladega stats are skewed by wrecks that cancel out his six wins in 39 starts. At Texas, Gordon has one win, and has finished sixth and fourth his last two trips there after three straight finishes outside the top 10.
NB's Prediction: 7th. You can look at Gordon's season one of two ways. Either the NASCAR karmic gods continue to owe him for his horrendous luck at the start of the season, or his good summer stretch has balanced out that awful first 11 races and he's starting the Chase at neutral. Gordon has a fantastic chance of getting to victory lane over the next 10 races, but all it takes is just one race with a bad break to take a driver out of title contention too.

Last week at Bristol, Denny Hamlin put himself in the picture to be at the top of the Sprint Cup Series points standings when the Chase begins. Sunday night at Atlanta, thanks to Jamie McMurray's right front tire and some quick work by his pit crew, Hamlin made sure that he will be at the top of the standings after next Saturday night's race at Richmond.
After McMurray blew a right front tire with six laps to go in Sunday night's race at Atlanta, Hamlin's pit crew got him off pit road first and Hamlin held off a hard charging Jeff Gordon to win his second straight Sprint Cup Series race and his fourth in 2012, the most of any driver in the Cup Series.
Before the caution, it was Martin Truex Jr. that was cruising towards victory lane. Truex had gotten around Hamlin with 44 laps to go and darted away, at one point building a near four-second lead with approximately 20 laps to go over Gordon, who had run down Hamlin for second place. The only drama was if Truex ? who reportedly had less than a lap of gas extra in his fuel tank ? would make it to the end with fuel in the engine.
But when McMurray's tire exploded just a few cars ahead of Truex on the frontstretch, that storyline went away and was replaced by a new one: which pit crew could get four tires bolted on the fastest? The answer to that question was Hamlin's, as he beat Truex off pit road by less than a car length.
On the restart, Truex, in the outside line, spun the tires and bottled up the drivers behind him. That opened the door for Gordon, who stayed in Hamlin's tire tracks as the two drivers separated themselves from the field. Gordon was running a slightly higher line than Hamlin and thanks to a surge of momentum down the backstretch on the final lap, took a shot at the lead in turns three and four on the final lap. He pulled up to Hamlin's quarterpanel, but he had too much speed. The car didn't stick, and Gordon had to let off the throttle exiting the corner.
Was it a Chase deciding move? Potentially. Gordon was, and still is, fighting for his Chase chances. Had he strategically used his fender to move Hamlin up the track ? a possibility he brought up after the race ? he's got an all-important second win towards his Wild Card chances. Instead, Gordon is still on the outside looking in, and Hamlin is guaranteed at least a share of the points lead.
"You wish you could bottle up and take these wins and put them in the Chase," Hamlin said, "They are worth something. They're worth three points (each). And this last week we've gained six points to the field in the Chase. That's six spots, that's hard to come by here and there and these guys know more than anything what one point matters when it comes to the Chase."

Just before the first race of the 10-race 2012 Chase for the Cup began, Tony Stewart was busy sizing up the competition:
That's none other than Delana Harvick, wife of fellow Chase driver Kevin Harvick. "And for the record," she later tweeted, "if uncle tony wins today it's not my fault!!! #sneakyassgraber"
Could be worse, Delana. He could've thrown a helmet at you.

At times, it's looked like Martin Truex Jr. has been poised to grab his first win for Michael Waltrip Racing. But, alas, it hasn't been meant to be, whether it was at Kansas when the handling on his car disappeared when the sun came out or at Atlanta, when Jamie McMurray blew a tire with just four laps to go, erasing Truex's large lead.
And while he's 0-fer this season, those strong performances are the main reason he's in this year's Chase for the first time since he signed on with MWR. In 26 races, he has 14 top 10s.
The last two weekends, Truex has lamented his team's bad luck that's prevented them from reaching victory lane. But let's be honest; that luck will have to change rather quickly if Truex is to be a strong contender in the Chase. Will it?
Best Chase track: If you take away a crash at Talladega, Truex's lowest finish at a Chase track in 2012 is 12th. We'll go with Dover, the site of his only Sprint Cup Series win and where he finished seventh in June.
Worst Chase track: By average finish, it's Talladega and Kansas. But Talladega is a crapshoot and Kansas is a completely new track. Next up on the list would be Martinsville, but Truex finished fifth there earlier this season.
NB's prediction: 11th. Much like Brad Keselowski last year, given the improvement at Michael Waltrip Racing, using past history may not be the best guide to how Truex will perform in the Chase. But that said, the recent history doesn't have any wins either. Truex has been running well enough to win, however, and if that luck turns, he's the perfect candidate to be this year's Tony Stewart.
