Smoke Signals: Stewart fights back for a 13th-place finish at Charlotte

Chase Power Rankings: And then there were three

The third race of the Chase is over, and that means it's time for Power Rankings! But we're doing things a little differently now that we're in the postseason. It's all-Chasers, all the time. Good job, good effort for those of you that didn't make it, but we've got bigger fish to focus on. We'll be judging who's running well, considering not just finishing position but quality of run, expected potential, and general gut feelings. As always, we hate your guy and are biased against him. Now, enjoy.

1. Brad Keselowski: @Kes might just be the smartest driver on the circuit, or at least the best prepared. He seems to be finding angles that others miss, and he's setting himself up with plenty of cushion for the inevitable off day. Now he returns to Talladega, where he's won before ... just don't remind Carl Edwards.

2. Jimmie Johnson: Relentless. Absolutely relentless. Keeping Johnson from winning this race has to count as a major victory for all the non-Hendrick teams, but the simple truth is that if Johnson continues to post tiny-number finishes, this race is going to be over pretty darn soon.

3. Denny Hamlin: How much do you figure Hamlin learned from 2010? Hopefully plenty, because it looks like he's in this Chase to stay. And you know he'd relish a chance to take out Johnson in revenge for that Chase two years ago.

4. Clint Bowyer: It would be just perfect if Bowyer was able to sneak into the mix here after Talladega, because he above most other drivers is the epitome of what the world expects a NASCAR driver to be. He'll need lots of help that he's not currently getting to run down the Big Three, but it could still happen.

5. Kasey Kahne: Having your season depend on a dropped lug nut, as could well happen with Kahne, is like a football team losing on an offsides penalty ... it happens, but nobody feels good about it in any way. Still, Kahne has rebounded from adversity before.

6. Jeff Gordon: You've got to admire what Gordon's doing here, but when the points leaders are the ones either winning or leading the race, there's just no way for him to make up any ground. Talladega may represent his last, best chance to get back into this Chase.

7. Tony Stewart: Getting to be about time to start that all-out winning streak, Tony. Dover was another unspectacular effort from the reigning champ, and as a result, hopes for a repeat are pretty dim.

8. Dale Earnhardt Jr.: We weren't looking to write off Junior until after a poor Talladega showing, but he's one of the drivers already in danger of falling off the map. Not to say this is the most important race of the season for him, but ... it's the most important race of the season.

9. Martin Truex Jr.: We're getting perilously close to the moral-victory section of the power rankings, but Truex nonetheless did manage to wrestle a sixth-place finish out of a potentially disastrous day. He'll need more than that to scare anybody, though.

10. Kevin Harvick: One of many drivers victimized by the unfortunate Yeley caution, but let's face it, things haven't been going well for Harvick for quite some time.

11. Greg Biffle: The Biffster's rant on the radio at Dover was one of the all-time greats, a symphony of profanity and rage that I want to make into my ringtone. You can understand it, though, can't you? Three weeks ago the guy was in first place, now he's an afterthought. That kind of sucks.

12. Matt Kenseth: Of all the ways that Kenseth could have parted ways with Roush Fenway, stumbling to a last-place finish in the Chase had to be pretty low on the list. Kenseth is a prideful guy, but nothing's clicking for the 17 team right now.

Non-Chaser of the week: Kyle Busch ran exceptionally well for most of the day, but let's throw some love Mark Martin's way. The guy simply runs well no matter when he shows up. Impressive stuff, and it's too bad we won't be seeing more of him.

All right, you're up. Who should rise and who should fall? Go!

Video: BMW E30 3 Series is the Ultimate Plowing Machine?

Don't look now, but snow season is rapidly approaching, and what better car to clear snow from a driveway than a... mint E30 BMW 3 Series Convertible. While most plow vehicles are big, heavy-duty trucks, Nordic Auto Plow didn't want the rest of us to be left out in the cold, so the Chicago-based company developed a plastic, light-duty plow that can attach to almost anything - including a car, an ATV or even a riding lawn mower. Now, this isn't the first time we've seen a product like this before, but the fact that the company turned the Ultimate Driving Machine into the Ultimate Plowing Machine definitely grabbed our attention.

This plastic, modular blade hooks to the front or rear of just about any vehicle using a pair of straps and a pair of bungee cords, and since it only rests against the car's bumper rather than actually being attached to it, we imagine it would be pretty hard to cause any frame damage. On most cars with plastic fascias, there will most certainly be paint damage, though.

Still, weighing under 50 pounds, taking less than a minute to install, costing less than $700 and being able to remove snow from the heated comfort of your car, this would probably be a time-saving, cost-effective alternative to a snow blower when clearing a driveway or small parking lot as shown in the videos below. Now all you need is a Mr. Plow jacket.

Spec ECU plans could still be scuppered

Dorna's chances of introducing a spec ECU in MotoGP could still be scuppered by objections from Honda. HRC team principal Shuhei Nakamoto has been an outspoken critic of the scheme and, speaking before the recent Japanese Grand Prix, warned that Honda would consider quitting if a spec system become mandatory . While Honda's position was weakened by the subsequent announcement that Dorna would also take over organisation of the rival World Superbike Championship , Nakamoto insists Honda's current contract gives it a say in future rule changes

Video: Formula Truck racer cheats death when his big rig's brakes fail

Diumar Bueno is definitely a lucky man. During practice for the Brazilian Formula Truck Series at the Autódromo Internacional de Guaporé, Beuno's Volvo race truck lost its brakes at around 118 miles per hour, forcing him to veer off the course and causing a spectacular, scary crash.

Coming out of the longest straight of the 1.9-mile, nine-turn course and realizing he had no brakes, Bueno turned into the grass infield hoping to get the truck slowed down before hitting the wall. Instead, his truck maintained its speed, got airborne when crossing over the racing surface and the crashed through the wall at full speed sending him into a 50-foot drop off.

Although his truck was completely destroyed, Beuno survived the incident suffering only two broken legs, a broken arm and a cut tongue, but according to an article on band.com.br, it will be about six months before the racer will be able to walk. While his injuries are certainly not enviable, the safety of these race-modified semi trucks is apparent after watching the video of the horrific crash, which we have posted below.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. gives Jimmie Johnson a lift back to the garage after Talladega crash

Yes, sometimes even NASCAR drivers need to bum a ride from their buddies too.

After they were both involved in Sunday's final-lap 25-car pileup at Talladega, Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. limped their cars across the start-finish line, Johnson officially in 17th place and Junior in 20th.

Once he was across, Johnson got out of his mangled car and needed a lift back to the garage, so he walked over (without his thumb up, unfortunately) to his Hendrick teammate's battered car and asked for a ride. Junior obliged, but as you know, Sprint Cup Series cars don't have passenger seats. So, therefore, Johnson had to settle for a windowsill ride back down pit road similar to the one that he gave their team owner Rick Hendrick after winning the All-Star race, a week after Hendrick had scored his 200th career Sprint Cup Series victory.

Anti-roll bar failure hindered Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton's hopes of a podium finish in the Korean Grand Prix were wrecked by a rear anti-roll bar failure. The former world champion's pace in the race dropped away shortly after the first pit stop, with him revealing on the radio that the car felt 'nervous.' A post-race inspection of his McLaren has revealed that a rear anti-roll bar was to blame - which caused excessive tyre wear and compromised his chances of fighting at the front

Racin? for bacon: Almirola hands out 600 pounds of bacon at Talladega

If you're like us around here, you greeted the recent rumors of an impending worldwide bacon shortage with a mixture of sadness and sheer terror. A world without bacon is not a world we want to live in, friends.

But fear not! Aric Almirola and Richard Petty Motorsports are teaming with Gwaltney this weekend at Talladega to dispute such fearmongering reports.

"It's great timing to have Gwaltney on our car this week with all this talk about a bacon shortage," Almirola said. "We kind of joke about the rumors and people are calling it the 'Aporkalypse,' but it's actually a serious matter that affects farmers across the country. It was a rough summer with the drought and we all hope that everyone recovers from it financially. But for this race week, we're here to assure race fans that they don't have to worry about the bacon case at the grocery store being empty. Gwaltney will be there, no matter what."

Almirola and Gwaltney put their bacon where their mouths are on Saturday by distributing 600 pounds of bacon in the garage. And it's a good thing they put that news out after the fact; "free bacon" is an incitement to riot in most parts of the South.

Almirola will start Sunday's Good Sam Roadside Assistance 500 in 18th position, which at Talladega means absolutely nothing. If he wins, Almirola hasn't exactly promised bacon for all, but it'll be a victory for the forces of bacon nonetheless.

RCR has high hopes for new hire

Richard Childress Racing has hired Dr. Eric Warren as its new director of competition in hopes of righting the ship.

Warren replaces Kent Day, who served in an interim role after Scott Miller left the company last September for Michael Waltrip Racing. Miller's loss has been felt dramatically at RCR, particularly at the Sprint Cup level.

Warren, 43, has a PhD in Aerospace Engineering. The Mt. Airy, N.C.-native has been involved in the motorsports industry since 1997. Warren worked as the chief aerodynamicist at Penske-Kranefuss Racing. In 2002, he became the technical director at Evernham Motorsports and advanced to vice president of the organization, then accepted a similar role at MWR. After a short-lived attempt with the U.S. Formula 1 effort, Warren joined Richard Petty Motorsports in 2010 as technical director, overseeing all engineering.

Warren has a challenge ahead of him at RCR. The Welcome, N.C.-based operation's Cup program has struggled this season to keep up with the sport's elite teams. Of the three Cup squads, only Kevin Harvick qualified for the Chase to the Sprint Cup this season. He currently sits 10th in the point standings despite a reunion with his go-to crew chief Gil Martin before the Sept. 2 race at Atlanta. The following week at Richmond signified the one year anniversary of Harvick's and RCR's last Cup win.

Paul Menard and Jeff Burton are 16th and 19th, respectively, in the point standings. However, Menard has yet to finish in the top five this season. Burton finished fifth and second - at the February and July Daytona romps. But between both drivers, they have led a total of just 58 laps.

Warren started at RCR on Monday.

Jeff Gordon to run Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles car at Charlotte

If you're a child of the late 80s and 90s like I am, then I can assure you that Thursday's announcement of Jeff Gordon's special paint scheme for the race at Charlotte Motor Speedway on October 13 was not your run of the mill paint scheme press conference.

This one involved the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Remember spending weekends as a grade schooler with not a care in the world watching TMNT cartoons? When you look at Gordon's car during the race, you'll probably have fond flashbacks to the time long before smart phones, *NSYNC and the Car of Tomorrow.

Leonardo dons the hood of the car, which is fitting because he was the best Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, and that fact is not up for debate. Why? Because he had two swords, and dual swords beat out nunchuks, sais and a bo staff in any type of dual. If the Turtles were to ever mutinize against themselves, there's no doubt that Leonardo would be the last one standing. (Nickelodeon, which currently airs the third incarnation of the animated series, is sponsoring the pre-race festivities at the track. No word if any Ford or Toyota cars will run a special Shredder scheme.)

Gordon also promised Thursday that he would breakdance like he did during banquet week last year if he won at Charlotte. Breakdancing and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? That may be too much.

Kurt Busch to drive for Furniture Row Racing in 2013

Kurt Busch will be switching teams at the end of the season again as Furniture Row Racing announced Monday that he would be behind the wheel of its No. 78 Chevy in 2013 replacing Regan Smith.

"Though we have made strides as a resourceful single-car Sprint Cup team, we are not where we want to be, which led us to the difficult decision of making a driver change as we move forward," Furniture Row Racing general manager Joe Garone said in a release. "Kurt's exceptional driving talent has the capacity to take a team to another level. We look forward to having Kurt join our Denver-based organization and feel his racing experience will play an important role as we plan ahead to 2013."

[Chase Power Rankings: Cue the Imperial March]

After parting ways with Penske Racing after a tumultuous end to the 2011 season, Busch, the 2004 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion, has spent this year at Phoenix Racing and is currently 25th in the points standings. He was suspended earlier in the season for the Sprint Cup Series' first race at Pocono for berating a reporter, an incident similar to the ones that helped lead to his departure from Penske in 2011 when he tore a reporter's transcript in half at Richmond and cussed out another at Homestead.

Running mostly sponsorless for one-car Phoenix Racing this season, Busch has two top 10s this season; his highest finish is third place at Sonoma and he's currently 25th in the points standings. Smith is two spots higher in 23rd, and would still be ahead of Busch in the standings if Busch had run the full season. Phoenix Racing gets both engines and chassis from Hendrick Motorsports while Furniture Row has an alliance with Richard Childress Racing.

Smith has been with the team since 2009 and won the 2011 Southern 500 at Darlington.

Garone had expressed interest earlier in the season about adding Busch to a second car at Furniture Row, with the mandatory caveat being if sponsorship could be found. Last week at Chicago, Busch and Garone expressed mutual interest and Smith said he didn't believe he'd be back with the team. On the flip side, Phoenix owner James Finch has mentioned the possibility of shutting his team down at the end of the season if it doesn't have sponsorship for next year.

So do you think Busch will crack the top 20 next year with his new team or have a shot at the Chase? Or will his performance improve at all? Drop us a line in the comments.

Racin? for bacon: Almirola hands out 600 pounds of bacon at Talladega
