Official: BMW celebrates DTM win with limited edition M3

BMW M3 DTM Champion Edition

In just its first season back in DTM race series, BMW pulled off a trifecta of wins (driver's title, manufacturer title and team title), and the automaker is celebrating with a limited-production commemorative version of the M3 called the DTM Champion Edition. BMW said that only 54 of these cars will be produced starting in February, but it did not say in which markets the car will be available. Included in the car's 99,000 euro (about $130,000 in the States) price is the chance to attend the BMW M Fascination Nordschleife driver training course at the Nürburgring.

Designed to look like and celebrate the Team Schnitzer BMW DTM racecar driven by Canadian Bruno Spengler in the 2012 season, the M3 DTM Champion Edition comes exclusively in a Frozen Black metallic paint with matte black wheels and BMW's M stripes running across the carbon roof and decklid. There are fender and rear-quarter-window decals to give it an authentic racecar look. Inside additions include door sill elements that replicate Spengler's helmet design, and his signature and the car's sequence number can be found on the instrument panel's carbon fiber trim.

BMW says the car will be sold in "various international markets," but we doubt we'll ever see it on sale in the US. Scroll down for BMW's press release.

2012 season in the rear view: David Ragan

The vitals: 28th in points. 0 wins, 1 top 5, 2 top 10s. 5 DNFs.

Moment to remember: Yeah, many people think that restrictor plate racing is a crapshoot, but given the team's performances, it seems pretty safe to say that plate racing has become Front Row Motorsports' strength. Much like his teammate first-name brother, David Ragan's best two efforts of the season came at Talladega, where he finished seventh in the spring and fourth in the fall. That fourth place finish came when somehow, some way, Ragan escaped from that final lap melee, battered race car and all, despite being the fourth car on the high line and in the thick of the accident.

And he also ran that awesome Where's Waldo car at Bristol.

Moment to forget: Much like the restrictor plate racing karma giveths, it also takes away. Maybe it was the deposit for the withdrawal that Ragan was to make at the final restrictor plate race of the season, but he was caught up in the crash on lap two of the Daytona 500 that ended the chances of Jimmie Johnson, Kurt Busch, Danica Patrick and others. Ragan finished 43rd.

The wrap: A year after scoring his first career win and eight top tens for Roush Fenway Racing, Ragan found himself out of a ride when sponsor UPS scaled back its NASCAR commitment and Jack Roush then went to three teams. Without many options, Ragan stayed in the Ford camp at Front Row, and ended up with an average finish in 2012 that was eight places lower than 2011 and completed the fewest laps of his Cup career.

2012 season in the rear view: David Gilliland

Vitals: 30th in the points standings. 0 wins, 0 top fives, 0 top 10s. 4 DNFs.

Moment to remember: David Gilliland's strength has been at restrictor plate tracks -- he finished third in the 2011 Daytona 500 and in the tandem-drafting era was Tony Stewart's best buddy -- so it's appropriate that the two best finishes of his season where at Talladega. He finished 13th there in the spring and 15th in the fall.

Moment to forget: Gilliland was involved in the early crash at Dover in June that included 13 cars and red-flagged the race. He finished 40th.

The wrap: No offense to Gilliland, but his 2012 season was quite unremarkable. He started every race, completing 91 percent of the season's laps and finishing on the lead lap eight times, including a stretch of five straight races in the summer. His average finish was also six spots higher than his average start. However, his average 2012 starting position was 33.5.

The addition of Penske to the Ford camp in 2013 could be a help or a hinderance to Front Row. On one hand, it's more data for Ford to gather for research and development. On the other, it knocks Front Row down the blue oval pecking order. If that has any effects, it could mitigate any potential steps forward for the team and Gilliland in 2013.

Kubica would shine in WRC ? Breen

Super 2000 World Rally champion and former WRC Academy title-winner Craig Breen has tipped Robert Kubica for the top in rallying, having competed against the Polish Formula 1 star on the Rallye du Var last week. Citroen driver Kubica retired from the lead on the event, while Breen finished third in a Peugeot 207 S2000. Breen's hopes of winning once Kubica had gone off the road were ruined by two punctures for the Irishman, but he admitted he had been hugely impressed with Kubica.

Report: GM profits threatened by glut of pickups

Chevrolet Emblem

Automotive News reports that General Motors may slash production or ramp up discounts in order to deal with an oversupply of pickup trucks. GM currently has more than double the standard supply of pickups, and the vehicles are threatening to dampen the automaker's profits for 2013. Typically, automakers try to sustain a 60- to 75-day supply of vehicles, but GM is currently loaded with a 139-day supply, as of last month. At the end of November, the automaker was sitting on 245,853 units.

The manufacturer says that it will adjust production accordingly before laying any incentives on the profitable pickups. Even so, there's some concern that the inventory swell could hurt the roll-out of the next-generation Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. GM actually began slowly stepping back production in August, but it's clear the company will take further action as it heads toward the end of the year and into the next. Analysts predict the automaker could reduce pickup manufacturing by nearly half in the first quarter of 2013.

That still may not be enough to keep GM from laying extra cash on the Silverado and GMC Sierra. While the company's incentive spending was down in November compared to the same month in 2011, both the Ram 1500 and Ford F-150 saw double-digit percentage increases in sales last month while the Silverado and Sierra numbers slid compared to a year prior. Incentive spending could help move more trucks and add some balance to the GM inventory surge.

Jimmy Fennig to crew chief for Carl Edwards in 2013

Matt Kenseth's current crew chief, Jimmy Fennig, will move to Carl Edwards and the No. 99 car in 2013, Roush Fenway Racing announced Wednesday.

Kenseth is leaving Roush at the end of the season to take over the No. 20 at Joe Gibbs Racing.

"We are excited about this change on both fronts," Jack Roush said in a release. "Pairing two highly successful veterans like Carl and Jimmy should be quite a matchup and it is our expectation based on what Jimmy has been able to accomplish with many high profile drivers, that it will provide the spark to get the No. 99 program and Carl back into championship form."

Edwards' long-time crew chief Bob Osborne stepped down in July for health reasons and was replaced by Chad Norris. However, the switch didn't boost Edwards' performance, and he missed the Chase and is currently in 15th place in the points standings without a win. Edwards, who lost out on the 2011 championship to Tony Stewart by virtue of fewer wins, has three top five finishes in 2012 compared to 19 a year ago. It's the second time in eight full seasons that he's missed the Chase. Kenseth is currently sixth in the Sprint Cup Series points standings, and won the Daytona 500 in February.

Fennig and Kenseth have been together since the middle of the 2010 season and have won three races each in 2011 and 2012. Fennig, a long-time Roush employee, won the 2004 Sprint Cup Series title with Kurt Busch. His move from atop the No. 17 box means that team will have both a new driver and crew chief in 2013.

Potentially two-time Nationwide Series champion Ricky Stenhouse is moving up to the Cup Series full-time in 2013, and will have Scott Graves has his crew chief. Graves was the crew chief for Edwards' Nationwide Series win at Watkins Glen earlier in the year and has conducted testing with the new 2013 Sprint Cup Series car.

Brad Keselowski still intends to buy tank, wants to chase Dale Jr

Now that Brad Keselowski has won the Sprint Cup Series title he wants to make it clear that he still intends to buy a tank. The ideal tank for Keselowski would be one from either World War II or the Korean War. His plans for the tank? Chasing Dale Earnahrdt Jr. As Nate Ryan reports, Keselowsi will fulfill his promise of buying a tank if he won the Sprint Cup. He also would like Dale Earnahrdt Jr. to buy one. ?I thought, ?Wow, that?d be awesome,? ? the Penske Racing driver said. ?Obviously living where I do around Dale Jr., I thought it would be cool if we both got a tank and chased each other around in the woods with them. It?s kind of our deal. ?I promised myself if I won (the title), I would buy one whether Dale does or not. It was kind of a little bit of motivation, I?d say. I?m not one to buy trophies for myself, but I think a tank would be pretty cool. I want to put one together and have some fun with it. When I?m done playing with it, I?ll just park it in the driveway.?

Luke Lambert to crew chief for Jeff Burton in 2013

The preparations for the 2013 Sprint Cup Series season have already begun.

Richard Childress Racing announced Monday that Luke Lambert would be the crew chief for Jeff Burton and the No. 31 in 2013 and that current crew chief Drew Blickensderfer would be replaced by Shane Wilson atop the team's pit box for the final three races of 2012.

"I want to thank Drew for all of his effort with the No. 31 Caterpillar team this season," Richard Childress said in a release, "He's a great crew chief and I can't say enough about his dedication to RCR. Making the move now, before the season is over, gives Drew some additional time to pursue other opportunities.

"Shane is a proven winner and I appreciate his willingness to step into this role for the balance of the 2012 season."

Wilson was Kevin Harvick's crew chief for the first 24 races of the season before he was replaced by Gil Martin, Harvick's old crew chief. Wilson also served as interim crew chief for Paul Menard when his crew chief, Slugger Labbe, was serving a NASCAR suspension. So after Texas, Wilson will have crew chiefed for all of RCR's teams in 2012.

According to a report from Fox Sports, Blickensderfer will be the crew chief for Marcos Ambrose in 2013, replacing Mike Ford, who became Ambrose's crew chief for the final 10 races of 2012 when Richard Petty Motorsports swapped crews before the Chase. Before coming to Richard Petty Motorsports, Ford crew chiefed for Denny Hamlin, and was atop the pit box when Hamlin finished second to Jimmie Johnson in 2010. Per the Fox story, Ford has an offer to crew chief at BK Racing in 2013.

Lambert and Burton worked together for the final 17 races of 2011 when Lambert replaced Todd Berrier as Burton's crew chief. Lambert is currently the crew chief for Elliott Sadler in the Nationwide Series. Sadler is leading the points standings with three races to go. Burton is 19th in the Sprint Cup Series standings.

Video: Tightest parallel parking record falls yet again

World Record Parallel Parking

It looks as if Mini didn't get to hold onto its Guinness World Record for the tightest parallel parking job for all that long. German stunt driver Ronny Wechselberger managed to slide a Volkswagen Up! into a space of just 12 feet and 0.88 inches. Given that the three-door Up! takes up a full 11 feet and 7.37 inches of space itself, the remaining room front and rear was less than the length of a Bic pen. The margin makes the Mini effort seem down right spacious by comparison. Ronny C' Rock, as the stuntman is also known, pulled off the feat at Flugplatz Kindel in Eisenach, Germany.

Earlier this year, Mini held a promotional event in China that saw driver Han Yue leave just 15 centimeters between his Cooper and two others. Before that, the record stood for just one month. You can watch the new record-setting slide in the video below, and be sure to go back and check out Han Yue's efforts here. Now, let's see them pull out of that spot.

Chase Watch: OK, now it?s a two-man race. Promise.

FORT WORTH, Texas -- The two-man battle that emerged over the final laps of Sunday's AAA Texas 500 left two others in the dust. And little doubt that this pursuit of the 2012 Sprint Cup Series championship is a race between Jimmie Johnson and Brad Keselowski and no one else.

Clint Bowyer entered Sunday's race third in the points standings, 26 points behind Jimmie Johnson. And in NASCAR nomenclature, he had a "good points day," running in the top five for most of the day and finishing sixth. But because Johnson and Keselowski were 1-2, he now trails by 36 points with two races to go in his first season with Michael Waltrip Racing.

"I've said this all along -- it's fun to be racing for the championship, but I'm more proud of where we're at contending for that championship, winning three races our first year together as a group," Bowyer said. "Got a long time to work. We just keep polishing the edges and keep getting better fixing our program week in and week out. We'll be there."

And unfortunately for Bowyer, it's not going to be this year. The same goes for Kasey Kahne, who, much like Bowyer, ran near the front of the field all day. But after contact with Jeff Gordon on lap 321, Kahne cut down a left-rear tire that exploded in turns one and two on lap 322 and brought out a caution.

Kahne entered the race 29 points behind Johnson. Thanks to repairs for the damage, he finished 25th. He's now 58 points back.

Who's up? Matt Kenseth, who finished fourth and jumped to fifth in the points standings from eighth. If it wasn't for two horrible races to start the Chase, Flatline would be right in the midst of this thing.

Who's down? This is a tie between Denny Hamlin and Martin Truex Jr., who each fell two spots in the standings. It was especially surprising for both, given how well they've performed at Texas in the past. Truex finished 13th. Hamlin finished 20th.

Who's out? Are you named Jimmie Johnson or Brad Keselowski? No. OK, then you are.

Binder Scores 100% at Langley

Last season the iRacing.com Sprint Car Series featured the introduction of Langley Speedway to the schedule. A flat track featuring six degrees of banking and a very slippery surface for the sprints, only those with the proper mixture of practice, speed and talent can tame this .395 mile oval. While last season?s inaugural events were overshadowed by a seemingly inept flagman, drivers looked forward to the week?s races, as they were back to familiar short-track grounds. Hot off of Week 1, five-time iSCS champion Alan Binder posted the fastest qualifying time of the week with a 14.337s fast lap. Storied NASCAR driver Kimi Raikkonen wins Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

And they said it couldn't be done.

No one could go to NASCAR, conquer it with the force of a thousand suns, and then return to Formula 1 and win again. Well, Kimi Raikkonen has done it.

Raikkonen won Sunday's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix for his first Formula 1 win since he jaunted over to NASCAR in 2011, and his first win in the series since the 2009 Belgian Grand Prix. It was the first F1 win for Lotus this year as well, and Raikkonen became the eighth different F1 driver to win a race this year after the first seven races featured seven different winners.
