Jimmy Fennig to crew chief for Carl Edwards in 2013

Matt Kenseth's current crew chief, Jimmy Fennig, will move to Carl Edwards and the No. 99 car in 2013, Roush Fenway Racing announced Wednesday.

Kenseth is leaving Roush at the end of the season to take over the No. 20 at Joe Gibbs Racing.

"We are excited about this change on both fronts," Jack Roush said in a release. "Pairing two highly successful veterans like Carl and Jimmy should be quite a matchup and it is our expectation based on what Jimmy has been able to accomplish with many high profile drivers, that it will provide the spark to get the No. 99 program and Carl back into championship form."

Edwards' long-time crew chief Bob Osborne stepped down in July for health reasons and was replaced by Chad Norris. However, the switch didn't boost Edwards' performance, and he missed the Chase and is currently in 15th place in the points standings without a win. Edwards, who lost out on the 2011 championship to Tony Stewart by virtue of fewer wins, has three top five finishes in 2012 compared to 19 a year ago. It's the second time in eight full seasons that he's missed the Chase. Kenseth is currently sixth in the Sprint Cup Series points standings, and won the Daytona 500 in February.

Fennig and Kenseth have been together since the middle of the 2010 season and have won three races each in 2011 and 2012. Fennig, a long-time Roush employee, won the 2004 Sprint Cup Series title with Kurt Busch. His move from atop the No. 17 box means that team will have both a new driver and crew chief in 2013.

Potentially two-time Nationwide Series champion Ricky Stenhouse is moving up to the Cup Series full-time in 2013, and will have Scott Graves has his crew chief. Graves was the crew chief for Edwards' Nationwide Series win at Watkins Glen earlier in the year and has conducted testing with the new 2013 Sprint Cup Series car.

2012 season in the rear view: Carl Edwards

Vitals: 15th in the points standings. 0 wins, 3 top 5s, 13 top 10s. 2 DNFs.

Moment to remember: The year that many thought was Edwards' to seize started off with a flourish when he won the pole for the Daytona 500. Edwards finished that race eighth while his teammates, Matt Kenseth and Greg Biffle, finished first and third respectively. Oh, Daytona, how you reflected the season.

(Edwards' highest finish in 2012 was fifth. Fifth. How staggering is that?)

Moment to forget: An apparent miscommunication between Edwards and his spotter that resulted in a restart penalty at Richmond in May.

Edwards (wrongly) assumed that he was the leader of the race after a caution flag flew in the middle of green flag pit stops. However, Tony Stewart, the driver to his inside was the race leader. Stewart appeared to spin the tires, complicating matters, and Edwards went in the restart zone.

Edwards was penalized for jumping the restart in a race after leading a race high 206 laps. He finished 10th, but looking back, that was the closest that Edwards ever came to victory lane.

The wrap: There's not much more to write about Edwards' frustrating 2012 that hasn't been said before. After finishing sixth at Michigan in August, Edwards was in 12th in the points standings, 38 points outside the top 10 with three races to go before the Chase. Yeah, 38 points might have been a lot to make up on Denny Hamlin, the man who was in 10th at the time, but Edwards had previously won at Bristol and Atlanta. And there was Richmond, where he had run so well in the spring. Alas, Edwards finished 22nd, 36th (thanks to a blown engine) and 19th. No Chase was in the cards. Will it be in 2013 with a new generation race car and Jimmy Fennig, Kenseth's old crew chief, atop Edwards pit box?

2012 season in the rear view: David Ragan

The vitals: 28th in points. 0 wins, 1 top 5, 2 top 10s. 5 DNFs.

Moment to remember: Yeah, many people think that restrictor plate racing is a crapshoot, but given the team's performances, it seems pretty safe to say that plate racing has become Front Row Motorsports' strength. Much like his teammate first-name brother, David Ragan's best two efforts of the season came at Talladega, where he finished seventh in the spring and fourth in the fall. That fourth place finish came when somehow, some way, Ragan escaped from that final lap melee, battered race car and all, despite being the fourth car on the high line and in the thick of the accident.

And he also ran that awesome Where's Waldo car at Bristol.

Moment to forget: Much like the restrictor plate racing karma giveths, it also takes away. Maybe it was the deposit for the withdrawal that Ragan was to make at the final restrictor plate race of the season, but he was caught up in the crash on lap two of the Daytona 500 that ended the chances of Jimmie Johnson, Kurt Busch, Danica Patrick and others. Ragan finished 43rd.

The wrap: A year after scoring his first career win and eight top tens for Roush Fenway Racing, Ragan found himself out of a ride when sponsor UPS scaled back its NASCAR commitment and Jack Roush then went to three teams. Without many options, Ragan stayed in the Ford camp at Front Row, and ended up with an average finish in 2012 that was eight places lower than 2011 and completed the fewest laps of his Cup career.

What Was Said Prior To The Season:
?With all the talk about Kyle concentrating on Sprint Cup only in 2012, you?d think he?d be a shoe in for the title. Because everyone has said, he does too much other stuff to win it all. Well here we are and I?m putting him 10th, why is that? I?m not sold on Joe Gibbs Racing as a whole being a strong enough team in 2012 to put him to the top. Should Tony Stewart take Roger Penske?s offer of an Indy 500 ride?

During his speech at Friday night's Sprint Cup Series banquet Roger Penske offered Tony Stewart a ride in a Penske IndyCar for the Indianapolis 500.

It was a joke.

Right?

Wrong, apparently. When asked after the banquet about his line, Penske didn't exactly back away or laugh it off.

From the AP:

''If he wants to do the double, I'd put him in it,'' Penske said. ''We've talked about it before, I guess I made it official tonight.''

Well holy crap.

Stewart moved over from the IndyCar Series to NASCAR full time in 1999 and last ran the Indianapolis 500/Coca-Cola 600 Memorial Day weekend double in 2001. That year, he finished 6th in the 500 for Chip Ganassi and then third in the 600 for Joe Gibbs Racing, his only Sprint Cup Series team until he got an ownership stake in Stewart-Haas Racing and started driving for his team in 2009.

He has sworn off the double (NASCAR chatters, insert your Whopper jokes here) since then. But will Penske's public proclamation sway him? He's won 15 Indianapolis 500s, you know.

If a driver was going to do the Indy/Charlotte double in the near future, the favorite to do so looked like it would be Danica Patrick, who was entertaining the thought as recently as this summer. But with her move to the Sprint Cup Series full-time in 2013, wiser heads prevailed and those plans have been scuttled, for now at least.

However, should her NASCAR owner do it? Stewart has never won the crown jewel of IndyCar racing ? his best finish is a 5th with 64 laps led in 1997. He's also never won the Daytona 500, going 0-14.

So how about this proposal: if Stewart wins the 2013 Daytona 500, he takes Penske's offer. Only Mario Andretti and AJ Foyt (who Stewart chose his car number at SHR after) have won both races. Stewart would have the opportunity to be the first driver to win both in the same season, and if he prevents his 0-fer streak from getting one closer to Dale Earnhardt's in Daytona, why shouldn't he go for it in Indianapolis?

Of course, there are many logistics to sort out if Stewart was to take Penske up on his offer; namely sponsor conflicts (Mobil 1 vs. Shell Pennzoil) and the time juggling that would be required to maintain a regular Sprint Cup Series focus while getting in as much seat time as possible in Indianapolis.

After all, Indianapolis is the race that Stewart grew up attending and dreaming about. And it's a track that, like Daytona, has teased him with strong performances. With Daytona knocked off the bucket list, only Indy would remain unchecked. It'd be too tantalizing to pass up.

DTM forced to move Norisring round

DTM organisers have been forced to change the 2013 schedule to avoid a clash between its Norisring round and the German Grand Prix. The FIA recently revealed that the German Grand Prix had been moved to create the space on the Formula 1 schedule for another European race in July . That left the GP clashing with the DTM's high-profile Norisring street race - usually attended by more than 100,000 spectators - on July 7, so organisers of the German series have moved that event to a week later.

Lotus duo ?will be much stronger? in ?13

Lotus boss Eric Boullier believes his team will deliver a much stronger Formula 1 campaign in 2013, even if it starts the season with a car that is only as quick as last year's. The Frenchman is convinced that the progress that his drivers have made, allied to a better technical understanding among the engineers, means the team can move forward even without technical gains. "I would be very happy to start the season with the same car performance we had last year relative to everyone else," Boullier told AUTOSPORT.

Chrysler 300 Motown Edition - commercial screencap

We're not sure if you heard, but Chrysler likes to celebrate the fact that it's from Detroit. You know, with the whole "Imported from Detroit" campaign featuring Eminem? It seems brand synergy may have reached its peak in the form of the Chrysler 300 Motown. According to Chrysler, this special edition sedan sedan "pays tribute to the Motor City's resurgence and determination through Detroit-born style and world class ingenuity." In real terms, that means extra chrome bits here and there, including a chrome grill and 20-inch polished "heritage" style aluminum wheels, all accented with black Chrysler and "Motown" badges.

Inside, the 300 Motown gets unique Pearl White Nappa leather seating, while the rest of the interior fittings are black. In a nice nod, the Uconnect 8.4 infotainment system's SD card reader has been pre-loaded with 100 tracks from original Motown artists. That collection of music pumps though the 10-speaker Beats Audio system, complete with 12-channel amplifier. The 2013 Chrysler 300 Motown is set to arrive this spring, with an MSRP of $32,995, which does not include a $995 destination charge.

This special edition is no random celebration of Detroit's music, as "Motown: The Musical" is arriving to the Lunt Fontanne Theater in New York City today. To that end, Chrysler has a new television spot, featuring Berry Gordy Jr., founder of Motown Records. Check out the video and learn more about the new 300 Motown by scrolling below.

2012 season in the rear view: Joey Logano

Vitals: 17th in the points standings. 1 win, 2 top 5s, 12 top 10s. 3 DNFs.

Moment to remember: Logano started and finished first in the spring Pocono race, leading 49 of the race's 160 laps. And he made his pass for the lead on Mark Martin on lap 157 with authority.

After looking to the inside down the frontstretch, Logano entered turn one on Martin's bumper and made slight contact with Martin's rear. That was enough to move Martin up the track and opened the inside for Logano to shoot through for the lead.

It was a risky move; had Logano hit Martin harder, it could have sent Martin (and Logano) careening into the fence. Had Logano backed off, he would have lost his momentum and may never have gotten to Martin's bumper again. He had his run, he went for it, and he got it, notching his second career Cup Series win.

Moment to forget: That win at Pocono put Logano in the thick of Wild Card contention at 14th place in the points standings. He would never be any higher. The following week at Michigan, Logano crashed on the backstretch after moving to avoid David Gilliland and finished 35th, falling to 15th in the standings.

The wrap: So, how did Logano end up 18th in the points standings with 12 top 10 finishes? Easy answer: 13 finishes below 20th place. The Loganocoaster was climbing and diving at a high rate of speed throughout 2012 and there were more valleys than peaks between that Pocono win and the Chase. In the 12 races that Logano had to grab a second win and really be a Wild Card contender, he finished in the top 10 three times and 30th or worse three times. If the Loganocoaster is a little more even-keeled in 2013, he could be a Chase contender in his new ride at Penske Racing.

James Buescher wins 2012 Camping World Truck Series title

James Buescher held off a furious late race charge by Ty Dillon that was blunted by a crash to win the 2012 Camping World Truck Series title Friday night at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

After a late race restart, Dillon had closed to second behind Kyle Busch and within a point of Buescher as they ran. Had Dillon been able to pass Busch, he would have assumed the points lead.

However, as Kyle Larson, who finished second last week at Phoenix, went low to pass Dillon for second with five laps to go, he couldn't complete the pass and made contact with Dillon, sending Dillon into the wall and Larson into a spin. The damage from the crash didn't destroy Dillon's truck but destroyed his chances. He was held two laps in the pit lane after passing the pace car in his hurry to get to pit lane before the red flag was displayed.

Buescher finished 13th. Timothy Peters was 8th, not enough to make up his 11 point deficit entering the race.

Cale Gale beat Kyle Busch in a thrilling finish to Friday night's race, passing Busch on the low side on the final lap in turns 3 and 4. Busch had the momentum advantage off of the high side off of turn four, but Gale pinched Busch towards the wall as the two came off the final corner and maintained the advantage as he made contact with Busch and Busch made contact with the wall to win by about a foot.

Johnson tries very hard to rattle Keselowski in final pre-championship press conference

Jimmie Johnson did his best to rattle Brad Keselowski on Thursday at the Sprint Cup championship contenders' press conference. But Johnson may have ended up unintentionally proving that Keselowski is the worthy rival Johnson's needed all these years.

Since Johnson began winning championships back in 2006, he's vanquished a host of the best names in NASCAR: Gordon, Edwards, Martin, Hamlin, Harvick. Since 2006, he's never gone toe-to-toe with a fellow driver heading into the final race and lost. But then, he's facing a far tougher challenge now than in any of his five championship seasons. He sits 20 points behind Keselowski, requiring both a strong finish from his own team and a weak one from Keselowski.

"Brad," Johnson said, mock-helpfully, "if you'd like me to call later and remind you ... of guys that didn't pull off the season finale as they would hope."

With talk to Twitter and families, along with some attempts at baiting that fell flat, this year's conference was far tamer than the past two years. In 2010, Johnson and Harvick tag-teamed Hamlin with such psychological ferocity that Hamlin's legs were shaking. And last year, Tony Stewart hammered Carl Edwards until Edwards could find his footing. You could argue, perhaps, that the winner of the psychological battle on Thursday was able to turn that victory into a major win on Sunday.

If that's the case, Johnson has reason to be worried. He used the exact same "all the pressure's on him" lines on Keselowski that worked so well on Hamlin two years ago:

"The magnitude [of an impending championship] sets in at some point," he said. "I've been the guy leading the points ... You're forced to answer questions that you're not used to answering, that you don't want to answer, and it builds through the course of the week. Again, it hits everybody differently, and there's no guarantees how it'll hit him. But I know from my own experience that there have been those moments. Fortunately I responded well to them. We'll see how the weekend goes."

But this time around, Keselowski wasn't biting. Indeed, Keselowski indicated he'd double down on the aggressive approach that's gotten him this far:

"One of my favorite movies in the whole wide world is this documentary on Ayrton Senna, and there's this really powerful scene in that movie that sticks with me when I think about this weekend," he said. "I think about this scene in the movie when they talked about him at Monaco, which was his ?? just his phenomenal track that he was so strong at and how he had this huge lead over his teammate ... and they were coming down to the closing laps of the race, and they told him to slow down, you have a huge lead, don't worry, just slow down, just?? and he wrecked. And I think of that as I approach this weekend. I'm going to go out there and play my game, race my way. That's got us to this point, and if we do that, we'll be fine."

2010 was a decisive knockout for Johnson. 2011 was a split-decision win on points for Stewart. 2012? To be the man, you gotta beat the man, and Keselowski weathered Johnson's best shots. The Blue Deuce gets the win on Thursday; we'll see how that translates on Sunday.
