Over the last seven years, it's been difficult to ascertain whether certain drivers were in a slump or simply didn't acclimate to the Car of Tomorrow.

Yes, numbers tell part of the tale:

- Dale Earnhardt Jr. scored just two of his 19 career wins during the COT era. Of course, throughout that time Junior also switched companies and worked with five different crew chiefs.

- Jeff Gordon won three of the first 16 races in the COT, but only six additional races during the evolution of that car model after the roll-out year in 2007.

Reports: Patrick has filed for divorce

Danica Patrick's split with her husband looks to be official. The NASCAR Sprint Cup rookie filed for divorce from husband Paul Hospenthal on Jan. 3 in the Superior Court of Maricopa County (Ariz.), according to multiple reports.

The reports state that, in the filing, Patrick cited her marriage as "irretrievably broken." The filing also states that the couple has a prenuptial agreement and that neither side will require financial support or alimony.

The 30-year-old driver announced in November that she and Hospenthal had decided to divorce.

"I am sad to inform my fans that after 7 years, Paul and I have decided to amicably end our marriage," Patrick said via her Facebook account. "This isn't easy for either of us, but mutually it has come to this. He has been an important person and friend in my life and that's how we will remain moving forward."

The pair married in 2005.

Auctions: Chip Foose custom 1953 Ford F-100 sells for $170K at Barrett-Jackson [UPDATE: w/video]

There may not be a more recognizable name in the world of custom cars than Chip Foose, and those star-struck (and well-healed) fans of Foose just had the opportunity to purchase one of the designer's custom creations for their very own garage. This 1953 Ford F-100 pickup was created to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the one item just about everybody has in their toolbox: WD-40.

Way back when, WD-40 was sold by the Rocket Chemical Company, and the vintage artwork on the door highlights that little bit of trivia. Under the truck's massive flowing hood sits an original 239-cubic-inch flathead V8 engine, with appropriately modern updates, naturally. A set of one-off Foose wheels wearing Pirelli P Zero tires completes the aesthetic.

Alonso would support Massa title bid

Fernando Alonso says he would have no qualms about playing a supporting role to Ferrari team-mate Felipe Massa if the Brazilian needed it. 2012 season in the rear view: Jimmie Johnson

Vitals: 3rd in the points standings. 5 wins. 18 top 5s. 24 top 10s. 6 DNFs.

Moment to remember: Winning from the pole in two consecutive races isn't too shabby is it? Especially when it's in the Chase.

That's what Johnson did at Martinsville and Texas. At Martinsville, Johnson took over the points lead, and then extended it slightly at Texas after his epic late battle with Brad Keselowski that at one point saw both drivers wash up the track in turns 1 and 2 side by side for the lead.

Keselowski had gotten to the front with a two-tire pit stop, but couldn't hold off Johnson after a green-white-checker restart where Johnson successfully pinched Keselowski down as the two entered turn one and pulled away for the win.

Moment to forget: Just a week removed from those two first-to-first performances, Johnson's pursuit of a sixth title effectively ended at Phoenix thanks to a cut tire.

Johnson entered Phoenix with a seven point lead over Keselowski. He left with a 20 point deficit after Keselowski survived the final lap melee as the field headed to the checkered flag to finish sixth.

The wrap: How do you characterize Jimmie Johnson's 2012? A failure because of the massively high standards he's set for himself over the past seven years? (If it is, then prepare to call every title-less season for Johnson a failure. That's when you know you're really, really good.)

Or is it truly a fantastic season given Johnson's six DNFs? Could any other driver finish in the top 10 of 80 percent of the races he completed? Yes, he was snakebitten at restrictor plate tracks, but come on, we all know at this point that they're pretty much just one big roll of the dice. When he was running at the finish, he only finished outside the top 17 once, and that was at Phoenix. Johnson led over 300 laps more than any other driver (Kyle Busch was second) despite being just 19th in laps completed.

After coming out on top in so many late season races and situations, it was only natural regression that Johnson was going to suffer some bad luck to derail his chances like what happened this season. But title or no title, it's still blatantly obvious that Johnson should always be one of the presumptive favorites for the title and that 2012 was a pretty dominating season.

Terranova flies as Peterhansel cruises

Stephane Peterhansel continued to cruise in the lead of the Dakar Rally as his X-raid team-mate Orlando Terranova set the pace on stage 10. Terranova's pace on the Cordoba to La Rioja stage made him the first Argentinian driver to take a Dakar stage win, and also the first man to set a fastest time in a BMW since 2010, the last year before X-raid switched to Minis for its main assault. It was a one-two-three for X-raid on the stage, Mini duo Nani Roma and Peterhansel going second and third.

Bowyer, Gordon feud still rages

Clint Bowyer doesn't know how he ended up on P. Diddy's yacht on New Year's Eve while on holiday in St. Barts.

Nor does he know how his NASCAR rival Jeff Gordon ended up at the same party.

But Bowyer, who hails from the Sunflower State, realized quickly he wasn't in Kansas anymore.

"It was the damndest boat you've ever seen in your life," Bowyer remarked of the ship owned by the rapper also known as Sean "Puffy" Combs. "I'm from Kansas. We don't have big boats in Kansas. We don't have very big bodies of water. So, I think he was on that same boat. (Bowyer laughs) But there were a lot of other people on there and there was a big time being had. So, yes, he was on there. I think it was on the same island.

"I'm pretty sure he was on there. It was pretty late."

But the "Battle in St. Barts" or the rematch between Bowyer and Gordon following their ongong feud from 2012 never materialized. And Bowyer didn't want to discuss it.

Detroit: Volkswagen shows off performance-ish Passat concept

As part of its 2013 Detroit Auto Show debut package, Volkswagen has rolled out a sportier version of the Passat sedan, though it's strictly conceptual for now. A small dose of go-fast visuals have been added to the handsome Volkswagen, including 19-inch wheels, carbon-capped mirrors, an advanced front lighting system, LED taillamps and dual exhaust. Some carbon bits and upgraded leather are found inside the cabin, as well.

But the real performance chops come in the form of a 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that sends 250 horsepower to the Passat's front wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission. That's a good boost in power over the 170 hp of the base 2.5-liter inline-five, but not quite as potent as the 3.6-liter VR6. A lowered sport suspension and revised electronic steering are also on hand, making things slightly more involving out on the road... we assume.

It's not quite the performance concept we were hoping for, but a more enthusiastic Passat isn't necessarily a bad thing. Scroll down for the press release.

2012 season in the rear view: Kyle Busch

Vitals: 13th in the points standings. 1 win, 13 top 5s, 20 top 10s. 4 DNFs.

Moment to remember: Busch's first and only win of the season came at Richmond in the spring, when he took the lead on pit road during the race's final caution and held off Dale Earnhardt Jr. for the win.

Moment to forget: The back-to-back engine failures that Busch suffered at Dover and Pocono on the first two weekends of June. Before Dover, Busch was eighth in the points standings. After Pocono, he was 12th. After those two races, Busch was never able to crack the top 10 in points again.

The wrap: It seems pretty hard to believe that a driver with 13 top fives and 20 top 10s didn't make the Chase, but that was Busch's season in 2012. Had Brad Keselowski not deftly pulled off a move to separate he and Busch on the final lap at Talladega, Busch might have made the Chase. Had Busch not crashed at the second Pocono race, he might have been in the Chase. It was just one of those years.

And, fittingly, in a semi-ironic sense, Busch had the best Chase of his career in 2012. Yes, he had issues at Loudon and crashed at Kansas, but in the other eight races, his lowest finish was seventh. Busch scored 359 points in the Chase. Yeah, Brad Keselowski scored 391, so Busch wouldn't have been in the championship discussion, but had he snuck in at Richmond, it would have been his best performance to date.

Breaking: 2014 Infiniti Q50 hits the web early, courtesy of... Infiniti

Well, what do we have here? It seems that Infiniti.ca, the official Canadian website of the Japanese automaker, accidentally published a load of 2014 Q50 images ahead of its official debut at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show.

As you can see in our high-res image gallery of screen shots above, the 2014 Infiniti Q50 carries along in the footsteps of the marque's current curvy design language. There's the requisite pinched chrome grille, upswept headlight clusters, and a hood with multiple flowing ridges, peaks and valleys.

As confusing as the newly Q-infused lineup may be on paper, there's simply no mistaking the new Q50 for anything but an Infiniti. You can expect a whole slew of images, facts, figures and commentary on the new luxury sedan on Monday, but until then, feel free to let us know what you think in the Comments.

Our friends at Road & Track recently stopped by Cars and Coffee in Irvine, California, with the 2013 SRT Viper and found themselves a place to park between a Lamborghini Aventador and a Lexus LFA. Those machines might as well be the three musketeers of ludicrous exhaust notes, and rather than keep those 24 raging cylinders muffled, R&T set about conducting an orchestra of internal combustion. On seeing these three lined up, we were more than prepared to call the Viper victorious when it came to tickling our ear drums, but the latest domestic V10 sounds down right civilized in this company.

If we're picking favorites, we have to say the LFA takes the cake. There's something about the noise of a street-legal V10 that can wrap it's tachometer all the way to 9,000 rpm that turns our knees to quivering dollops of jelly. Check out the clip below for a listen. We shouldn't need to tell you to get frisky with the volume.
