Motorsports: Toyota updates Le Mans-ready TS030 hybrid for 2013 season [w/video]

Toyota TS030

Toyota has polished up its TS030 hybrid Le Mans race car for the 2013 season. Once again, the machine uses a 530-horsepower 3.4-liter naturally aspirated V8 paired with a capacitor-based hybrid system with an additional 300 horsepower on hand. This year, engineers have tweaked the drivetrain to deliver more power and efficiency while bolstering reliability. The chassis has received a few updates of its own, though Toyota is keeping those changes under wraps for the time being. Fans can expect to see a new aerodynamic package at work on the prototype, and the chassis will conform to new regulations that increase the minimum weight of LMP1 cars by 33 pounds.

Last year, the TS030 won three events over six races, but ran into a number of issues during the 2012 24 Hours of Le Mans. The No. 8 Toyota suffered a spectacle of a crash that saw driver Anthony Davidson hospitalized with two fractured vertebra. And while the No. 7 car briefly held the lead over rival Audi, trouble in the pits and engine failure eventually saw that car sidelined as well.

This year, the No. 7 TS030 will be piloted by Alex Wurz, Nicolas Lapierre and Kazuki Nakajima while the No. 8 machine will fall to the hands of Anthonay Davidson, Stephane Sarrazin and Sebastien Buemi. You can view the full press release below as well as a quick video on the 2014 TS030.

Darrell Wallace Jr. to run full season in Camping World Truck Series

Joe Gibbs Racing development driver Darrell Wallace Jr. will drive for Kyle Busch Motorsports in the Camping World Truck Series in 2013.

Wallace, 19, will be the fourth African-American to run a full season in a NASCAR National Series after Wendell Scott (who went to victory lane at Jacksonville in 1963 in what was then the NASCAR Grand National Series), Willy T. Ribbs and Bill Lester. Wallace is a graduate of NASCAR's Drive for Diversity program, and made four NASCAR Nationwide Series starts for JGR in 2012.

He'll drive the No. 54 truck for KBM while still under contract with JGR. Busch will also run 10 Truck Series races this year in another KBM truck.

In his four starts last season, Wallace had three top 10s and started on the pole at Dover in the fall before finishing 12th. In three seasons in NASCAR's K&N Pro Series East, Wallace has six wins and finished second in the standings in 2011.

As evidenced by his Nationwide statistics, Wallace more than held his own in his step up to NASCAR's national stage in 2012 and it may be just a matter of time before he joins Scott as a winner in a NASCAR national series race.

Dario Franchitti and Ashley Judd ending marriage

Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti and actress Ashley Judd are breaking up after more than 10 years of marriage.

They issued a statement to People.com on Tuesday:

"We have mutually decided to end our marriage. We'll always be family and continue to cherish our relationship based on the special love, integrity, and respect we have always enjoyed."

Judd and Franchitti were married in 2001, and Judd was a regular attendee at many IndyCar races, and in 2007, when Franchitti won his first Indianapolis 500 as rain started to pour from the clouds, danced and ran down pit road in the rain in celebration.

Sandwiched around a brief 2008 stint in NASCAR, Franchitti won four straight IndyCar Series titles from 2007-2011. He was seventh last year.

The couple's split is the second high profile dissolution of a racing marriage this offseason. In November, former IndyCar and now NASCAR driver Danica Patrick announced that she was divorcing husband Paul Hospenthal after seven years of marriage. Patrick revealed to the AP on Friday that she was dating fellow NASCAR driver and Sprint Cup Series Rookie of the Year candidate Ricky Stenhouse.

Making Room for Cyclists in the (Rules of the) Road

It is little wonder why the rules of the road for cyclists are so poorly understood. They are hopelessly complex. ISC?s president was not a fan of tandem racing

It's probably safe to say that NASCAR's new Sprint Cup Series car is already a winner in the eyes of International Speedway Corp. President John Saunders.

ISC owns both Daytona and Talladega, and when on a conference call last week discussing his tracks and the racing, Saunders had some strong words.

From the Sporting News:

?The tandem racing, two or three events of that kind of stuff ? was quite frankly pathetic,? Saunders said. ?It's not what Talladega has been known for.?

In the last few years of the COT, drivers figured out that the fastest way around the track was in pairs, with the rear car glued to the back bumper of the lead car. The multiple duos of cars spread all around the track was a stark departure from the traditional pack racing at Daytona and Talladega. In an attempt to curb the tandem racing, NASCAR made rule-tweaks for engines to get hotter faster. And while the tweaks did limit the tandem drafting, it didn't prevent races from being decided over the final laps by it.

Perhaps coincidentally, perhaps not (Saunders would lean to the latter), attendance has been down sharply at Talladega. Last fall's race had an estimated attendance of 88,000, down 20,000 from the spring race. Overall, ISC admissions revenue declined almost six percent from 2011 to 2012.

But with the new car, tandem drafting is likely a thing of the past. With the new, manufacturer specific front clips on the cars for 2013, each bumper is slightly different, unlike the COT. And also unlike the COT, the front and rear bumpers don't match up, making prolonged pushing almost impossible -- just look at what happened with Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Marcos Ambrose at Daytona testing. With the old cars and bumpers, that's just an innocuous push down the straightaway or, at the worst, a save for Ambrose.

Will that help put fans in the seats? ISC certainly hopes so.

2013 Season Preview: No. 6 Kasey Kahne

As we count down to the 2013 Daytona 500, we're also counting down how we think the Chase will play out this season as predicted by Nick Bromberg, Jay Busbee, Jay Hart and Geoffrey Miller. So sit back, relax, and watch the 2013 Chase unfold before your very eyes. Though you should be warned, we picked Carl Edwards to win last year.

2012 Finish: 4th. 2 wins (Charlotte and New Hampshire)

2013 Predictions:
Bromberg: 5th
Busbee: 5th
Hart: 8th
Miller: 7th

Crew Chief: Kenny Francis

When we last saw Kahne: He was sneakily hanging around on the periphery of the championship discussion until a 25th place finish at Texas derailed any thoughts of Kahne winning the title. After moving up to third with a third place finish at Phoenix, Kahne was 21st at Homestead and finished fourth.

Big Question for 2013: What's the second act? Kahne had some Jeff Gordon type luck int he first part of the season and through six races was 31st in the points standings. Mind you, that was a six race stretch that Kahne had two poles; speed wasn't an issue. That was proven as Kahne immediately reeled off seven straight top 10 finishes, and by the time the circuit left Dover after the season's 13th race, he was 14th in the points standings.

Track most likely to win at: Charlotte may belong to another Hendrick driver besides Jimmie Johnson. Kahne has finished in the top 12 in nine of the last 11 Charlotte races. Those two efforts came consecutively in his last race at the track for Richard Petty Motorsports and his first race for Red Bull Racing.

Track most likely to require a miracle to win at: It's not his worst track statistically, but Kahne has never finished in the top 10 at Watkins Glen. He finished 13th last year -- his highest career finish there.

How Kahne could win the Chase: Kahne ran strongly at Martinsville last season and grabbed his first win at New Hampshire, two tracks he hadn't excelled at in the past. And they're Chase tracks to boot. Couple strong performances again there with Kahne's continued excellence at the 1.5 mile tracks that make up the Chase and there's your recipe for a title.

How Kahne couldn't: Those strong Martinsville performances weren't an indication of things to come and that, coupled with an average finish at Dover, derails his chances at a title. Though let's be honest, it's hard to make a compelling case for Kahne not to win the championship, so that speaks to how strongly he's viewed as a contender.

New York Times admits Tesla Model S writer didn't use "good judgment"

tesla model s owners road trip

And, lo, in the case of John Broder vs. Elon Musk, The New York Times is admitting defeat. A little bit. Sort of.

"Musk is at fault, too, for using the car's driving logs "in the most damaging (and sometimes quite misleading) ways possible."

Yesterday, the NYT's public editor, Margaret Sullivan, wrote the official Times response to the very public dispute between the newspaper's reporter, John Broder - who wrote a story about how a Tesla Model S failed him on a trip up the east coast - and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who called that original story a fake and then dumped a bunch of data from the car's log to show why he used that word. Editor Sullivan admits the drive "did not go well." In the aftermath, she says she tried to look at the facts in an unbiased fashion, eventually determining that Broder was not precise enough at times and did "not especially" use "good judgment along the way." Musk is at fault, too, she says, for using the car's driving logs "in the most damaging (and sometimes quite misleading) ways possible, as he defended his vehicle's reputation." Sullivan also says she believes Broder, "took on the test drive in good faith, and told the story as he experienced it" even as he "left himself open to valid criticism by taking what seem to be casual and imprecise notes along the journey."

This whole story, of course, is really about the fact that electric vehicles suffer a drop in range in cold weather, which matters more than in normal cars since there is less range to begin with (not to mention it takes longer to refuel an EV's energy reserves than it does its liquid-fueled counterparts). There are a number of factors in play, but Tesla has said range drop in the Model S is about 10 percent (which, interestingly enough, is about the same as what vehicles powered by gasoline engines suffer in such weather).

Interestingly enough, a 10-percent efficiency drop is about the same as what ICE vehicles suffer.

Consumer Reports has an interesting article up about learning how to adjust to cold-weather changes in its Model S, including a tale similar to Broder's about running the car down to the "charge now" warning screen, but the institute managed to make it to their destination. CR writes, "To its credit, the Model S delivered 176 miles from a full charge in cold weather - considerably more than any other EV on the planet. While it was in line with what the car predicted, it proved well short of the rated 240 miles the car promised when I started, let alone the 265 estimated by the EPA or the 300 touted by Tesla."

Meanwhile, over in take-a-step-back-ville, Grist suggests that the entire public dispute is a "sideshow" and that:

It is probably true that electric cars will never be able to replace gas cars, if the cars themselves - the widgets - are the only thing we replace. The entire system was designed and built around ICE cars. Turns out it's difficult to build a luxurious, two-ton armored tank that can travel 300 miles on a quick-charging battery pack. The problem, however, is not merely that our cars consume too much oil. It's that our transportation system consumes too much oil. A better system won't merely involve better cars, it will involve driving less, telecommuting more, using more public transportation, sharing cars, making cars smarter, and building more and better electrical infrastructure.

This story is far from over, even though the facts and he-said/he-said nature of the situation seem to be solidifying. Late tomorrow, Tesla will hold its quarterly earnings call, and we're going to bet this incident will come up. One interesting tidbit we learned in a preview article of that call is that Musk earns only $33,000 a year from his part-time CEO role at Tesla (he splits his time between Tesla and SpaceX). No one ever said changing the way the world drives was going to be easy... or instantly profitable.

Donovan McNabb tweets kudos to Danica Patrick for winning the Daytona 500 a week early

Hey Donovan, I'm sure Danica appreciates the sentiment, but you got your facts mixed up.

The former NFL quarterback sent his congratulations to Danica Patrick after she won the pole for the Daytona 500 on Sunday but instead of congratulating her for that achievement, he was a week ahead of himself.

Yes, Patrick is the first female to win a pole in the Sprint Cup Series (and thus the Daytona 500), so it's a historic achievement. But the Daytona 500 is next week.

And outside of the fact that McNabb got his Danica Patrick accomplishments mixed up, does anyone else think that tweet looks like it came straight out of translating software with phrases like "the Illinois native Danica Patrick" and "win in a big race with this magnitude"? Or is that just us?

McNabb played 11 seasons with the Eagles and then finished his career with the Vikings and Redskins. In 2008, McNabb famously admitted that he didn't know that a regular season NFL game could end in a tie after his Eagles tied the Bengals. He now works for NFL Network.
