Hamlin, Stewart Showcase Market For Late Model Championship For The Pros

Sometimes I think I need to stop dreaming so much.

Carl Edwards wins at Phoenix, Full Results for Subway Fresh Fit 500

Carl Edwards won the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Phoenix International Raceway. Jimmie Johnson was second followed by Denny Hamlin.
It was the first win for Edwards in 70 races. Edwards? last win came at Las Vegas in 2011. After winning the race Edwards did his customary back-flip and then took a moment to celebrate with the fans.
Mark Martin sat on the pole for the race becoming the second oldest driver to even win a pole in NASCAR?s top series. He would lead for the early part of the race but had to pit for right side tires which placed him back in the field.
Danica Patrick struggled all weekend with her car and cut a right side tire just past halfway ending her day. She was running 32nd at the time of the accident which also collected the car of David Ragan.

Coletti sets pace as GP2 test ends

GP2 veteran Stefano Coletti set the pace on the final day of pre-season testing at Barcelona on Thursday. The Rapax driver came out on top during a flurry of activity in the morning session, as most drivers ran the soft tyre compound once the track had dried out. Coletti was also one of the leading runners in the slower afternoon session, setting the second fastest time on the hard tyre as Felipe Nasr led the way with a soft compound run

Alonso warns rivals he is even stronger

Fernando Alonso has warned his rivals that he is in even better shape than he was last season, as he sets his sights on delivering his first Ferrari world championship. Although he has drawn short of declaring that his Maranello team has a car that is good enough to come out on top in Australia later this month, he reckons that he is personally in the form of his career. After a 2012 campaign where he excelled, and was voted the Driver of the Year by Formula 1 team principals, Alonso said at a Santander media event in Barcelona on Monday that he is heading to the first race even stronger

Did Franco insult Danica Patrick?

James Franco had the honor of being the Grand Marshall for The Daytona 500 on Sunday, and it will most likely be his last time. As with tradition, the Grand Marshall is responsible for only one little speaking role in which you simply say into a microphone, ?ladies and gentlemen start your engines.? However, James decided to take some liberties with the traditional starting call and changed it to, ?Drivers, and Danica, start your engines.? We aren?t sure if this was on purpose and meant as a sign of respect to Danica Patrick for winning the pole position at The Daytona 500, or if it was a slight to Danica as the phrasing would suggest. Either way, it is never smart to stray from tradition, especially when you only have one job. [SB Nation] Article found on: Cosby Sweaters

Chevy unveils new 2014 SS, bearing a marked resemblance to on-track version

On Saturday at Daytona International Speedway, Chevrolet unveiled the 2014 model of the Chevrolet SS, the same day the SS race car makes its debut in the Sprint Unlimited race.

We'll save the marketing-speak for Chevy itself ? this isn't a commercial, after all ? but we'll tell you that it's the company's first V-8, rear-wheel-drive performance sedan since 1996. It's built on the same architecture as the Camaro, Caprice police patrol vehicle, and the Holden VF Commodore. It goes from 0 to 60 in about five seconds.

The 2013 Sprint Cup series will feature 17 Chevy drivers. Chevy cars will serve as the pace cars for the Daytona 500 (2014 Chevrolet SS), Nationwide race (2013 Camaro ZL1), and Camping World Truck Series (2014 Silverado 1500 Crew Cab).

Geneva: Rinspeed MicroMax Concept offers cheerfully wacky public transportation

Rinspeed MicroMax Concept

The Geneva Motor Show never does lack for high-minded and/or wacky concept cars, and throughout the years Rinspeed has done more than its fair share to add to the inventive environs. With plucky iconoclasts like the BamBoo, iChange and (of course) the Lotus Elise that got turned into a submarine, what can we do but wait with baited breath for the next installment of Swiss madness? This year the outside-of-the-boxers at Rinspeed have brought along a microMAX concept that sees one giant box on wheels packed with concept-car goodness.

The basic idea behind the EV taxi/bus hybrid is that of smarter public transportation. The microMAX utilizes cloud-based software that can "talk" to other vehicles on the road, and find optimal routes for passenger pick-ups and efficient driving. The roomy interior has space for one driver, two passengers and a lot of stuff, ostensibly making it very convenient for family use or IKEA runs. Naturally the microMAX has a coffee machine (the Swiss love coffee), a refrigerator (the Swiss love snacks) and integrated WiFi (everyone loves the internet).

Look back at our original post for even more information regarding the microMAX concept, and peruse our gallery of live images to get your yearly Rinspeed fix.

Kyle Busch wins Dollar General 200, Full Results from Nationwide race at Phoenix

Kyle Busch won the Dollar General 300 from Phoenix International Raceway. It was his first win of the season. Brad Keselowski, Justin Allgaier, Trevor Bayne and Elliott Sadler rounded out the top five.
The pole sitter of the race was Kyle Busch in the No. 54 Monster Energy Toyota. He led 142 laps, the most of anyone. His Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, Matt Kenseth, led the next most laps at 41.
Busch?s win was his fifth in the Nationwide Series at Phoenix but his first since the 2011 season. Busch failed to win a race in the series last season while driving for his own team. This winter he partnered with Gibbs to field his car.
Making a rare Nationwide Series start in the No. 5 for JR Motorsports driver Jimmie Johnson struggled for much of the day and never led a lap before finishing 12th.

NASCAR: fence action for Talladega

NASCAR has promised to implement any immediate lessons from its review of the Nationwide crash at Daytona in time for this year's races at Talladega. Senior vice president Steve O'Donnell said NASCAR's comprehensive review would concentrate first on what changes can be made for Talladega, the second superspeedway after Daytona, and then on changes to the sport as a whole. O'Donnell stressed however that there was no set timetable for changes and that NASCAR would apply lessons if and when they arise from the investigation

The most unique car in the Daytona 500

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ? When Michael Waltrip takes the green flag in the 55th running of the Daytona 500, he'll be in a used car no longer wanted by Earnhardt Ganassi Racing, one that has used parts purchased at auction or castoffs from Roush Yates.

But that's not only what makes it so unique.

[Also: Daytona fans injured as car slams fence in Nationwide race]

The future No. 30 is sporting the number 26 this weekend in honor of the 26 victims of the December 14 tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. It will also adorn the number 80888, the number to which people can text donations to the Sandy Hook School Support Fund.

Before a preseason meeting in January, car owner Brandon Davis and driver David Stremme were approached by NASCAR president Mike Helton. Davis, who purchased Inception Motorsports last year and renamed it Swan Racing, laughs when he tells the story now, but he recalls the possible reasons that Helton would want to talk to an owner who just entered the sport, not to mention a team that hadn't run the entire 36-race the year before.

"Walked in the door, Mike Helton slaps me on the shoulder and says, 'Hey I need to talk to you guys after this is over.' " Davis said. "And I?m like, 'Oh [shoot], what did I do wrong? That was my first thing, like, 'Ah, what the hell?'

"And we sat there and I was nervous the whole time, like 'Man, should I just leave this thing?' After it was over with, he came over and said 'Hey, I have this idea. Since Michael?s in the car, and I mentioned this to Michael, running the 26 for the 26 people that lost their lives in Newtown.' It was 100 percent Mike Helton. Mike Helton made that deal happen."

The partnership was announced on February 14th, with NASCAR CEO Brian France and wife Amy making a $50,000 donation to the fund with a matching gift from the NASCAR Foundation.

Stremme, who was a minority owner in Inception before Davis bought the team, will be the driver for the remainder of the season but is stepping aside this weekend for the higher profile of Waltrip.

"Stremme wants to race the Daytona 500 just like I did and it?s his car," Waltrip said. "But he thought that me driving it would strengthen his relationship with Toyota and really bring his team into the family more."

Stremme made his Cup Series debut for Chip Ganassi in 2005, but hadn't had a full-time ride since 2009. That's when he went searching for partners to start their own team. His idea: go to auctions and buy as many good parts as he could for as cheaply as possible, something he still does today for Swan as a self-professed "man of many hats."

"I still do," Stremme said. "We race off of other people?s leftovers, I guess you would say. ? And there?s a lot of things that teams waste and do things, and we?re able to go still race. Like this car here that we?re running, is Jamie McMurray?s Shootout car from last year. " McMurray wrecked in that race. "We fixed it, put a Toyota body on it and done everything. That?s the way that we have to build this organization is be smart about our money.

[Also: Danica Patrick bows out of Nationwide race; ready for Daytona 500]

"It?s just multiple areas we purchase from and we make it work. A lot of it is we might have some big team might say, ?Hey, we?re getting rid of all these brakes,? and there?s nothing wrong with them, they just want to change manufacturers and we buy them."

Stremme met Davis, CEO of Swan Energy, at Talladega last spring where he pitched him on buying the team. Davis gave Stremme his business card and told him to call him if he was serious, Stremme did just that, and Davis finalized the purchase in the fall.

In the offseason, the team hired crew chief Tony Eury Jr. and Steve Hmiel as its director of competition. Eury Jr. and Hmiel worked together at Dale Earnhardt Inc. while Eury Jr. was crew chiefing for Dale Earnhardt Jr. Last year, Eury Jr. served as Danica Patrick's crew chief in the Nationwide Series for 26 races before parting ways with JR Motorsports. That name recognition from working with both Junior and Patrick was a big draw for Davis.

"And Tony was at the top of the list, but for me, it pushed it over the top that people know who Tony is. That Tony has a fan base. No other crew chief had a fan base. And if we?re going to build this team, we have to develop that. For the team, for the driver, for Tony, and our overall product, just everything that we bring to the table, it needs to be known."

Speedweeks has helped with that awareness. Not only for Newtown, but for Swan.

"The goal is to make the race. We did that," Waltrip said. "The goal was to build the team. I think we?ve been able to do that. And the goal was to have something cool on the car for the 500 and I know we did that."

Waltrip can relate to what it can be like to be a new owner in NASCAR, having started Michael Waltrip Racing seven years ago and gone from missing the Daytona 500 and being penalized in his team's debut 2007 season to two of his drivers making the Chase for the Sprint Cup last year.

"Our team has made a 180," he said. "And everybody thinks it happened overnight but it?s actually taken about seven years. And so I lived it, I experienced it, I?m very knowledgeable about everything we went through in order to get where we are and I?m really thankful that David included me in the family to help them try to maybe get to where we are now without some of the hurdles we had to overcome."

[Also: Jimmie Johnson's daughter has a favorite driver -- and it's not JJ]

Many new teams have come and gone in the six years since Waltrip became a team owner, and both Stremme and Davis are cognizant of the financial pitfalls of racing at NASCAR's top level. That's why Stremme's still going to those auctions.

"Steve and Tony and myself, we?re all very hands on," Stremme said. "Everyone on the crew, we do what we?ve got to do and those guys work hard. Instead of having seven guys and three dogs before, we?ve got 20 guys and three dogs. We?re still the same people and it?s just an old-school mentality of racers and I feel like we?ll be able to survive off of that mentality."

Getting a Sprint Cup championship was hard; holding onto it could be even harder

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The 2012 Sprint Cup championship was decided 89 days ago about 290 miles south of here, but for Jimmie Johnson, the battle to get into Brad Keselowski's head rolls on. Getting to the top is hard enough, Johnson suggested; staying there could be even harder.

"Once you are a champion, at any point following that when you don?t run like you should for a period of time, the questions will come," he said. "That is when any driver and team is tested. It just depends on when that moment in time is. Brad and (crew chief) Paul (Wolfe) are both very strong together. I don?t see it affecting them and preventing them from succeeding, but they will be reminded often that you have to go out there and earn each and every week. It?s not a layup."

[Also: Matt Kenseth and Kurt Busch crash just minutes into Sprint Unlimited practice]

Easy enough. Some typical mind-games talk. But then Johnson turned up the heat: "Watching him on Sports Center following the race trying to drink a beer was not sure the best thing for our sport and how he handled that," he laughed. "But honestly, he and Paul (Wolfe, crew chief) did an amazing job ... What I was laughing about is Brad, as mature as he wants to portray himself as, he had some growing to do. Now he is in the spotlight as the champion, and I think we all sit back and chuckle at times at some of the things he says and does. He is a great guy. He has the best of intentions for our sport; for his sponsor; for his team. He just needs to mature a little. I'm sure people can look back on my '06 year and have plenty of things to point fingers at."

Keselowski laughed at the idea that he might be a little less than serious. ?There's nothing wrong with a little style, is there? Everyone likes a little style," he said. "I feel like I have a little style. I'm wearing white shoes. Who else wears white shoes? Dario [Franchitti], right??

White shoes or not, Keselowski knows exactly the kind of NASCAR symbol he wants to be. "I am going to be my own person and look out for what is best for the sport," he said. "I have always felt that way, whether I was a champion or not. I feel like every driver has a responsibility to make the sport better and all it can be. I might have a louder voice now, but I took it seriously before I was a champion."

Craziest Moment from Phoenix: Danica Patrick hits wall hard after losing a tire

Danica Patrick's next race after the Daytona 500 wasn't a top-10 repeat.

A week after finishing 8th in the Sprint Cup Series' opening race, Patrick's car lost a tire on lap 176 exiting turn four during Sunday's Subway 500 at Phoenix International Raceway and smashed hard into the wall. After rebounding off of the SAFER barrier, Patrick's car collected David Ragan.

Ragan hit Patrick's at such an angle that it sheared off the sheetmetal on the left side of Patrick's car like a can opener, spraying safety foam from the inside of the car everywhere.

Patrick, who got out and walked away from the accident, wasn't the first driver on the day to suffer tire issues, as teammate Ryan Newman, among others, had previously hit the wall twice with right front problems. She said that there was no warning of any tire issues with her car before the crash and that the car suddenly drove straight to the right on her. Phoenix's flat layout is notoriously hard on brakes, especially those of ill-handling cars. Right front tires can have problems because of the buildup in brake heat from excessive usage in the corners.

Patrick officially started 40th and struggled with the handling of her car all day, never making much progress through the field before crashing. She finished 39th.

50 tried to accompany Andrews as she walked pit road, but she was having none of it. Well, that was awkward.

Earlier, 50 had surely raised the blood pressure of NASCAR officials when he arrived at Daytona and tweeted, "Damn I don't see no black people lol."

"A buddy of mine was talking about this detox diet, it?s like a 15 day deal and for the first eight days you drink prune juice and then the last half of it you drink carrot juice, so they were just picking on me, somebody that was talking in that podcast, I guess it was (JRM spokesman) Mike Davis," Junior said. "Just misinformed, I?m not drinking it all the time, but just during that little detox thing."

As a fitness professional, when I hear the words detox, little sirens go off in my head like there's a fire in my brain. Detox. Not good. They're kind of (OK, really) dumb. Please Junior, continue. Don't tell me you actually did one of those stupid cleanse things did you? Next thing I know, you'll be talking about the sweet Tracy Anderson workouts you've been doing to tone up in your firesuit.

"It was pretty tough too. I was surprised I was able to make it. It was like just fish, chicken and raw, steamed vegetables and then there was like two days where you just ate vegetables and fruit. That was pretty tough for me to not have any meat. I think the older you get the more you have to do to kind of maintain a healthy weight," Junior said.

AHHHH!!!! Protein is your friend, Dale! It's the building block of muscle after all. Yes, you can't eat at 38 what you could eat at 21 without paying the waistline consequences, but move some heavy stuff man. I know you're not a big fan of it, but you'll feel better about pigging out every once in a while.

But wait, that detox thing was temporary, right?

"That?s really what it?s about for me is just trying to maintain my weight so I don?t have to keep getting my driver suits altered throughout the season," Junior said. "Last year I was like, ?Man, they?re shrinking, something is wrong with the washer.? This off-season I lost a lot of weight, lost about 15 or 20 pounds and just trying to do a better job of managing my calories and stuff like that. I never really worried about it before; just eat all kinds of stuff like pizza and wings and stuff every day and not really watching portion controls and stuff like that. Just getting out of control so reining all that back in, not getting too crazy about it though. I?m no health freak by no means.?

OK, whew. There's some common sense. And something that everyone can follow. If you want to lose weight like your favorite driver, you don't have to do anything crazy, I swear. Just start paying attention to portion control and don't overeat. It's the most effective way to maintain and lose weight. No carrot or prune juice needed.

We have a small staff of real talented photographers On Pit Row. I am not one of them. I leave the important work to BethAnne, Glenn and Jordan. But that doesn’t stop me from taking my camera to the track. I don’t try to take serious pics. I mostly goof around. But sometimes, I like [...]
