Carl Edwards snaps winless streak at Phoenix

Carl Edwards' Sprint Cup Series 70-race winless streak is over after he held off Jimmie Johnson and Brad Keselowski at Phoenix International Raceway on a green-white-checker restart for his first win in almost two years.

On the restart, which came after Ken Schrader's crash with three laps to go, Keselowski pushed Edwards from the start/finish line all the way into turn one, allowing Edwards to clear both he and Johnson and cruise to the finish. And most importantly, cruise to the finish under power.

"Oh I know, I talked to a couple people about that this week ... 'I?m about to start getting mad,'" Edwards said about the streak. "I try to stay positive but we really, really like winning and I can?t say enough about everybody believing in me. I?m telling you, we?re back, this is going to be good. Whatever it is you?re doing out there, don?t lose hope. Keep digging and things can work out, I?m proof. This is just awesome, one of the coolest wins of my life."

As the race wound down, the lead lap cars were cutting it short on fuel as the race's final set of pit stops came just inside the teams' window to finish the race without stopping again. And Schrader's caution flag looked like it would make fuel even more of a factor. But while Keselowski said he ran out of gas crossing the finish line, fuel (or a lack of it) didn't affect the race's finishing order.

[Related: Danica Patrick hits wall hard after losing a tire in Phoenix]

Edwards' last Sprint Cup Series win came March 6, 2011 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and his 70-race winless streak tied the longest streak of his career. The track where he broke that first 70-race streak? Phoenix, where he won 2010's fall race.

In victory lane, you could sense the relief in Edwards' voice. Not only because he had gotten his first win in over 700 days but because being doused with Gatorade at Phoenix was a stark contrast to what happened at Daytona during Speedweeks, where Edwards was involved in five accidents, including one in the Daytona 500.

Does this victory automatically make Edwards a contender again? No, not by itself, and besides, it's still way too early to think seriously about the championship. But this win could serve as a great springboard for Edwards to wipe out the memories of 2012 and once again be a factor in the title race.

Denny Hamlin says he will appeal $25,000 fine

Denny Hamlin took to Twitter Thursday night and said he will appeal the $25,000 fine that NASCAR levied against him for comments he made after Phoenix.

At Las Vegas for testing, an angry Hamlin said that he wasn't going to pay the fine, and elaborated further on Twitter.

The short of the long of it is I believe I was severely disrespected by NASCAR by getting fined. I believe that the simple fact of us not even having a conversation about this issue before I was hit with a fine has something to say about our relationship. What I said was 1 sentence taken completely out of context. Most drivers will tell you that we constantly have our AND nascars best interest in mind when speaking. On the other hand I am a person that worked very hard from the BOTTOM to get where I am today and someone telling me that I can give my 100 percent honest opinion really bothers me. Since being fined in 2010 I have been a lot more careful about what I say to media and I felt this past weekend felt completely in my rights to give a assessment of the question asked. I feel as if today NASCAR lost one of its biggest supporters vocally of where our sport is headed. So in the end there are no winners. I said today I would not pay the fine. I stand by that and will go through the process of appealing. Trust me, this is not about the money.. It's much deeper. I will now shift my focus on giving FedEx and my team what they deserve this weekend, a win.

NASCAR Vice President of Competition Robin Pemberton said that the appeal process for Hamlin's fine would be the same as the one that teams go through for technical violations. However, let's be honest; this isn't nearly as objective as a technical violation would be, and that subjectivity could impact Hamlin's chances of winning his appeal for a fine he should have never received in the first place.

?Drivers and Danica, start your engines?: James Franco?s curious Daytona 500 starting command

There's a formula to NASCAR's "start your engines" commands, and it's not dissimilar to the National Anthem: get in, say your line, get out. Don't get fancy, don't get cute, because it never ever ever works.

At Sunday's Daytona 500, actor James Franco, in town to promote his upcoming "Oz, the Great and Powerful," had to do just one thing: say four words. Four words. "Drivers, start your engines." It used to be "gentlemen," of course, but since Danica Patrick is no gentleman, it needed to change.

Well, change it Franco did, but not quite in the way NASCAR would have liked. "Drivers ... and Danica"? Hmm. Misstep, or not-so-subtle editorial commentary? Most likely, Franco had intended to say "Gentlemen and Danica," but hey, this is what happened. Ah, well.

Funnily enough, Franco talked about the command in his pre-race press conference. He noted that "Danica had done something special here, so I might have to switch it up." And there you have it.

For what it's worth, Danica Patrick started first, but surrendered the lead to Jeff Gordon on the first lap.

Kurt Busch Taking Bristol Momentum to Another Successful Track

If statistics carry any meaning in motorsports, then Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif. would be one the best tracks for Kurt Busch to continue his momentum following a stalwart fourth-place performance at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway in his No. 78 Furniture Row Chevrolet SS. Of the 23 venues that comprise the 36-race Sprint Cup schedule, the 2-mile Auto Club Speedway is where Busch has achieved his best finishing average ? 12.7 in 19 career starts. The former NASCAR champion?s record at the Southern California facility also includes one win (2003), four top-fives, nine top-10s, three poles and 231 laps led. He posted a ninth-place finish last year at Auto Club Speedway, driving the No. 51 car for Phoenix Racing. ?The Bristol finish was no doubt a morale lift and gave our Furniture Row Racing team an opportunity to settle in and build on the foundation of the top-10s we achieved in last year?s final three races,? said Busch. ?The key is to continue the momentum at Auto Cl...

Vampire Weekend torches Saab 900 Convertible for music video - screencap

Or is it the other way around?

Could Vampire Weekend be trying to tell me something? A just-launched music video for the indie rock band's new single Diane Young features what looks like a pretty mint black Saab 900 Turbo Convertible being torched in slow-motion. In fact, with the exception of a brief, flickering cameo by a 900 three-door of a similar vintage, that's all that there is to the nearly three-minute long video. It's both sad and oddly beautiful.

Coincidentally, I have a similar-looking turbocharged black Saab convertible sitting in my garage, and I've been reluctantly pondering its sale this very week. Admittedly, mine is a later model (2001 9-3 Viggen), but tri-spokes and more tapered rump aside, it looks eerily identical. And while mine isn't mired in flames (I love it too much to torch it), through no fault of its own, it's been sitting motionless far too regularly. Thankfully, I see a better future for it than the droptop seen above.

So, what's the deal? Did VW lead vocalist Ezra Koenig have a Saab love affair that went bad, leading to this conflagration of music video? Is he unhappy about the fate of the perennially troubled Swedish automaker? Or did he and the band just figure that the video below was an attention-grabbing/artsy and inexpensive way to put promote their forthcoming album, Modern Vampires of the City? The world might never know...

Kyle Busch wins second Budweiser Duel in caution-free fashion

Kyle Busch capitalized on a Jeff Gordon pit road speeding penalty to capture the second Budweiser Duel qualifying race for Sunday's Daytona 500.

Gordon started on the pole for the race by virtue of qualifying second during last weekend's pole qualifying session and kept Busch, Kasey Kahne, Matt Kenseth and others at bay until the race's first set of pit stops.

As Gordon led the field onto pit road, he was penalized for speeding entering pit road in sections four and five of the race. It was a penalty that puzzled Gordon, who said he was under his prescribed tachometer reading while he drove to his pit at the far end of pit lane.

[Related: New Daytona 500 favorite emerges after Duel 1]

"We've got a major problem with the tach then, I was way under," Gordon radioed to his team after he was informed of the penalty, which put him a half a lap behind.

That handed the lead to Busch, whose team had audibled as he entered his pit stall. Instead of taking two tires as they had planned, crew chief Dave Rogers made the decision to take fuel only, and it put Busch at the head of the pack, a position he held for all but one lap the rest of the way. He'll start fourth in Sunday's Daytona 500.

On the final lap, Kahne was able to get around Kenseth on the backstretch for second, but didn't have enough time or momentum to make a move on Busch before the checkered flag. Much like the first duel race, this race was dominated by cars on the outside line of the banking. But unlike the first race, which saw a late caution bunch up the field and provide a flurry of multi-lane racing to the finish, this race never got one.

[Related: Danica Patrick flying high personally and professionally]

And that caution flag would have been Gordon's only hope of getting back within sniffing distance of the lead. The race's only moment that could have been caution-worthy happened just before Gordon's speeding penalty. As he was entering the pits behind Gordon and others, Ryan Newman's car wheel hopped under braking, and he spun towards the outside wall at the entrance to the tri-oval. But because the field was spread out due to the green flag pit stops and he was able to continue on his own, it didn't fly.

Gordon finished 12th.

Mike Bliss, who had to serve a black-flag penalty early in the race because his window net fell down, finished 22nd and joined Brian Keselowski as the only two drivers to miss the Daytona 500.

Official: Volvo confirms unnamed US model reveal for NY show

Tucked into the press release for the "display debut" of the Volvo V60 Plug-In Hybrid at the New York Auto Show, Volvo snuck in a single line announcing that it will also be introducing a new model for the North American market. As much as we'd love to see the svelte V40 on American roads, we're pretty sure the automaker is looking to fill its US station wagon void with the V60.

The 2014 Volvo V60 is part of a comprehensive lineup update that was unveiled earlier this month in Geneva, and it would give Volvo dealers a conventional wagon (not including the XC70) for the first time since the V70 and V50 were killed off. We'll still be keeping our fingers crossed for the stylish V40 hatchback or the fuel-efficient V60 diesel hybrid, but we have to wait until next week to find out for sure.

The most unique car in the Daytona 500

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ? When Michael Waltrip takes the green flag in the 55th running of the Daytona 500, he'll be in a used car no longer wanted by Earnhardt Ganassi Racing, one that has used parts purchased at auction or castoffs from Roush Yates.

But that's not only what makes it so unique.

[Also: Daytona fans injured as car slams fence in Nationwide race]

The future No. 30 is sporting the number 26 this weekend in honor of the 26 victims of the December 14 tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. It will also adorn the number 80888, the number to which people can text donations to the Sandy Hook School Support Fund.

Before a preseason meeting in January, car owner Brandon Davis and driver David Stremme were approached by NASCAR president Mike Helton. Davis, who purchased Inception Motorsports last year and renamed it Swan Racing, laughs when he tells the story now, but he recalls the possible reasons that Helton would want to talk to an owner who just entered the sport, not to mention a team that hadn't run the entire 36-race the year before.

"Walked in the door, Mike Helton slaps me on the shoulder and says, 'Hey I need to talk to you guys after this is over.' " Davis said. "And I?m like, 'Oh [shoot], what did I do wrong? That was my first thing, like, 'Ah, what the hell?'

"And we sat there and I was nervous the whole time, like 'Man, should I just leave this thing?' After it was over with, he came over and said 'Hey, I have this idea. Since Michael?s in the car, and I mentioned this to Michael, running the 26 for the 26 people that lost their lives in Newtown.' It was 100 percent Mike Helton. Mike Helton made that deal happen."

The partnership was announced on February 14th, with NASCAR CEO Brian France and wife Amy making a $50,000 donation to the fund with a matching gift from the NASCAR Foundation.

Stremme, who was a minority owner in Inception before Davis bought the team, will be the driver for the remainder of the season but is stepping aside this weekend for the higher profile of Waltrip.

"Stremme wants to race the Daytona 500 just like I did and it?s his car," Waltrip said. "But he thought that me driving it would strengthen his relationship with Toyota and really bring his team into the family more."

Stremme made his Cup Series debut for Chip Ganassi in 2005, but hadn't had a full-time ride since 2009. That's when he went searching for partners to start their own team. His idea: go to auctions and buy as many good parts as he could for as cheaply as possible, something he still does today for Swan as a self-professed "man of many hats."

"I still do," Stremme said. "We race off of other people?s leftovers, I guess you would say. ? And there?s a lot of things that teams waste and do things, and we?re able to go still race. Like this car here that we?re running, is Jamie McMurray?s Shootout car from last year. " McMurray wrecked in that race. "We fixed it, put a Toyota body on it and done everything. That?s the way that we have to build this organization is be smart about our money.

[Also: Danica Patrick bows out of Nationwide race; ready for Daytona 500]

"It?s just multiple areas we purchase from and we make it work. A lot of it is we might have some big team might say, ?Hey, we?re getting rid of all these brakes,? and there?s nothing wrong with them, they just want to change manufacturers and we buy them."

Stremme met Davis, CEO of Swan Energy, at Talladega last spring where he pitched him on buying the team. Davis gave Stremme his business card and told him to call him if he was serious, Stremme did just that, and Davis finalized the purchase in the fall.

In the offseason, the team hired crew chief Tony Eury Jr. and Steve Hmiel as its director of competition. Eury Jr. and Hmiel worked together at Dale Earnhardt Inc. while Eury Jr. was crew chiefing for Dale Earnhardt Jr. Last year, Eury Jr. served as Danica Patrick's crew chief in the Nationwide Series for 26 races before parting ways with JR Motorsports. That name recognition from working with both Junior and Patrick was a big draw for Davis.

"And Tony was at the top of the list, but for me, it pushed it over the top that people know who Tony is. That Tony has a fan base. No other crew chief had a fan base. And if we?re going to build this team, we have to develop that. For the team, for the driver, for Tony, and our overall product, just everything that we bring to the table, it needs to be known."

Speedweeks has helped with that awareness. Not only for Newtown, but for Swan.

"The goal is to make the race. We did that," Waltrip said. "The goal was to build the team. I think we?ve been able to do that. And the goal was to have something cool on the car for the 500 and I know we did that."

Waltrip can relate to what it can be like to be a new owner in NASCAR, having started Michael Waltrip Racing seven years ago and gone from missing the Daytona 500 and being penalized in his team's debut 2007 season to two of his drivers making the Chase for the Sprint Cup last year.

"Our team has made a 180," he said. "And everybody thinks it happened overnight but it?s actually taken about seven years. And so I lived it, I experienced it, I?m very knowledgeable about everything we went through in order to get where we are and I?m really thankful that David included me in the family to help them try to maybe get to where we are now without some of the hurdles we had to overcome."

[Also: Jimmie Johnson's daughter has a favorite driver -- and it's not JJ]

Many new teams have come and gone in the six years since Waltrip became a team owner, and both Stremme and Davis are cognizant of the financial pitfalls of racing at NASCAR's top level. That's why Stremme's still going to those auctions.

"Steve and Tony and myself, we?re all very hands on," Stremme said. "Everyone on the crew, we do what we?ve got to do and those guys work hard. Instead of having seven guys and three dogs before, we?ve got 20 guys and three dogs. We?re still the same people and it?s just an old-school mentality of racers and I feel like we?ll be able to survive off of that mentality."

Happy Vettel sees no need to worry

Sebastian Vettel said he was satisfied with a podium finish in the Australian Grand Prix, insisting that Red Bull does not need to be worried about missing out on victory. The reigning world champion finished 22 seconds adrift of race winner Kimi Raikkonen , and he was unable to live with 2012 title rival Fernando Alonso either after starting the race on pole. Earnhardt Jr. off to fast 2013 start

Things are certainly looking good for Junior Nation this season.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished sixth in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway on Sunday, climbing another spot to second in the standings. He has four top-10 finishes in four starts, matching points leader Brad Keselowski in that category.

As he looked over his race at Bristol, though, Earnhardt Jr. was quick to pass along the credit for his run to crew chief Steve Letarte.

"He made a couple, two, three great pit calls there at the end, and gave us the opportunity to get some guys on some old tires, and beat a few guys that we probably weren't going to beat," he said.

"Great call by him."

Earnhardt Jr. said that he and his Hendrick Motorsports team were somewhat caught off guard by the track conditions changing really fast over the course of the race. That's why strategy and changes to the car became critical.

As he looked over the race, could he have done anything differently?

Crash ensures Tony Stewart?s winless Daytona 500 streak continues

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- As has become customary, Tony Stewart entered Sunday's Daytona 500 as one of the favorites. And why not? He has 19 victories at Daytona International Speedway, second only to Dale Earnhardt.

But as has also become customary, Stewart left Daytona Beach on Sunday night without the Harley J. Earl trophy. His 15th attempt at winning the Daytona 500 was effectively ended by a lap 34 crash.

Of Earnhardt's 34 victories, only one of them came in the Daytona 500. He went 18 years before winning his first 500 in 1998. Stewart's 15 year streak isn't there yet, but it's creeping so ever closer.

The crash started ahead of Stewart when Kasey Kahne went spinning towards the infield and Kevin Harvick hit the wall as the field checked up behind Kahne. Harvick's car spun to the inside, but when he was tagged by Juan Pablo Montoya it spun back up the track. The avenue that Stewart had to potentially get by on the high side was blocked and Harvick's car slammed into his.

[Related: Jimmie Johnson wins Daytona 500 with powerful late-race stand]

Being taken out so quickly meant Stewart would take an early points hit. But when he was asked about that, the importance of winning a Daytona 500 was obvious in Stewart's answer.

"To hell with the season. I wanted to win the Daytona 500," Stewart said. "We had a car that we could pass with today. We were passing cars by ourselves ... Happy with our car, was just waiting for it all to get sorted out again. I don't know what started it, but we just got caught up in another wreck."

Last year, Stewart was caught in a crash on the tri-oval and finished 16th. In 2007, he and Kurt Busch crashed while Stewart was leading. While he's won the summer Daytona race four times, has three Sprint Unlimited victories and won Saturday's Nationwide Series race for the seventh time in nine years, the closest he's come to victory lane at the Great American Race is in 2008 when he was passed by Ryan Newman for the lead on the final lap.

There are other drivers with longer winless streaks; third-place finisher Mark Martin made his 29th Daytona 500 start without a win on Sunday. But the three-time champion Stewart has accomplished just about everything else in the Cup Series except win the 500, much like it was for Earnhardt until he won his first 500 at age 47. And that quest will continue into 2014.

Power Rankings: Five-time still reigns supreme

A new year means a new set of Power Rankings! After every race, we'll opine about who we think is at the top of the Sprint Cup heap and how and why they got there. Remember, this isn't scientific, as our formula is the perfect blend of analytics and bias against your favorite driver. So let's get on with it, shall we?

1. Jimmie Johnson (Last Week: 1): Wow, Jimmie, you're acclimating yourself quite nicely to the top spot. Sure you don't need anything? Drinks? Food? A hot towel? You're good? You're sure? Wow, it's like you've been here before. You're an old pro at this. Anyway, I know it's reeeeeeeally early, but would anyone be surprised if Jimmie Johnson led the points standings the entire regular season?

2.Dale Earnhardt Jr. (LW: 4): Did you know that Junior finished fifth on Sunday? That's two top fives to start the year for the driver who could formerly be known as NASCAR's Most Popular Driver. He hasn't done that to start the season since 2004, a year he finished fifth. Yeah, he's driving the second-best car in his shop. So what? Look at the points standings.

3. Brad Keselowski (LW: 3): You have to wonder if his previous conflict with Carl Edwards crossed Keselowski's mind at any point during the race's final caution flag. Yeah, Jetski and Carl have gotten along lately and there was no need to resuscitate that tiff over the two laps at Phoenix. But can you imagine the craziness that would have prevailed if Keselowski would have pushed Edwards into the wall instead of into the lead when the green flag waved?

4. Denny Hamlin (LW: 11): What? The Hamster is higher than Edwards? Well, previous performance has to have some bearing in these rankings, and he was here last week. And we loved that apron-cutting pass on the final lap so much that it merited a power rankings bump. Especially given that Hamlin started the race in the back of the pack because of a pre-race engine change.

[Also: Will publicity from NRA 500 be detriment or benefit to NASCAR?]

5. Carl Edwards (LW: Not Ranked): NASCAR is rigged! They made it so the Subway car won the Subway race! How could they be so obvious?! If you actually believe that theory, then you should bet heavily on Jimmie Johnson at Las Vegas. It was a nice Daytona bounceback for Edwards, who might have changed tires fewer times at Phoenix than he crashed cars in Volusia County.

6. Clint Bowyer (LW: NR): Finishes of sixth and 11th in the first two races of the season will put you in fourth place in the points standings, sixth in the power rankings and who-knows-where in the hearts of NASCAR fans. Depends on how fast those hearts are beating from the rabid consumption of 5-Hour Energy, I guess.

7. Mark Martin (LW: 5): Yeah, Martin finished 21st, but leading 75 laps is good for something, right? Yeah, but those 75 laps were at the beginning of Sunday's race, and then Martin was never in contention after the halfway point. Does that sound anything like 2012?

8. Matt Kenseth (LW: NR): Can we safely put to bed any of the theories that Kenseth will struggle early in his transition to JGR? Yeah, he got bit by the JGR motor gremlins while leading at Daytona, but we've seen that they're not very discerning.

9. Aric Almirola (LW: NR): Bacon. Bacon. Bacon. Bacon. Did you know that if the regular season ended today that Almirola would make the Chase? No, you didn't. Don't lie.

10. Greg Biffle (LW: 6): Biffle would make the Chase too. he led briefly at Phoenix, but that was that early in the race and he finished 17th. Remember, this is an odd-numbered year.

11. AJ Allmendinger (LW: NR): Not a bad season debut for Allmendinger, eh? With his partial schedules in both the Sprint Cup and IndyCar Series, Allmendinger has a chance to become the first driver to post top 10s in the same year in both series since Tony Stewart.

12. Casey Mears (LW: NR): His 14th place finish was his highest since a 12th at Martinsville in 2011. And perhaps most importantly for Geico, he got a ton of TV time from the numerous replays showing Junior having to slow down on pit road to avoid Mears pulling into his pit stall.

Dropped Out: Danica Patrick, Regan Smith, Michael McDowell, JJ Yeley, Ricky Stenhouse Jr.

Lucky Dog: Oh man, you got any ideas?

The Front Row Racing DNF: Front Row Racing! It's been a brutal opening two races for the team. All three cars were involved in the same accident at Daytona, and the Davids Gilliland and Ragan crashed again at Phoenix while Josh Wise finished 35th.

Kyle Busch Nabs Pole; Starting Lineup For The Food City 500

Photo Credit: Sean Gardner/NASCAR via Getty Images

Kyle Busch finished inside the top-five for the first time of the 2013 season last week in Las Vegas; that momentum has seemingly carried into one of his best race tracks ? Bristol Motor Speedway.
Friday in Coors Light Pole Qualifying, Busch recorded a lap of 129.535 mph. He completed his lap in 14.813 seconds around the 0.533-mile short track. His lap edged out Kasey Kahne, and it marks the 11th pole of Busch?s Sprint Cup Series career.
With 44 cars taking a lap in qualifying that meant one driver would be heading home early. Unfortunately for Scott Riggs, his lap wasn?t quite quick-enough and his No. 44 Ford will not compete on Sunday.
Here is the full starting lineup for Sunday?s Food City 500 at Bristol:

Power Rankings: The Empire Strikes Back

A new year means a new set of Power Rankings! After every race, we'll opine about who we think is at the top of the Sprint Cup heap and how and why they got there. Remember, this isn't scientific, as our formula is the perfect blend of analytics and bias against your favorite driver. So let's get on with it, shall we?

1. Jimmie Johnson. Well hello there, Mr. Vader. Have you ever been to the top before? It's quite nice, isn't it? Have a seat right there, we'll take you on a tour. That was some power move by JJ on the race's final restart, you guys. He was fortunate enough to be leading at the time the caution flag flew so that he had lane choice with six to go and held off the rest of the field. Side note: with the evidence that Johnson and team filed a "Harlem Shake" video on the Daytona infield after the race, it raises an important question: Will NASCAR ever NOT beat a pop culture trend into the ground long after the fad has passed?

2. Danica Patrick. OHMYGODWHYDIDYOUPUTHERHEREHOWCOULDYOU? YOUAREJUSTDOINGTHISFORPAGEVIEWSAREN'TYOU? Look, if you watched the race on Sunday and you were putting these rankings together, you'd be a fool to leave Patrick out after the race she ran. And had she not been freight-trained by Dale Earnhardt Jr. on the final lap, she'd be no lower than third on everybody's boards. Besides, it's not like she's going to be in here in a month or so, right? Right?

3. Brad Keselowski. Speaking of power moves, what kind of message would that have sent had Keselowski held off the field for the final 20 laps with not only a taped up car, but one that had suffered significant trackbar damage to boot? Side note v2: What does Keselowski think of Instagram now that we know Chad Knaus has recently taken an interest in it?

4. Dale Earnhardt Jr. If the man had another lap... Instead, this was the first Daytona 500 in four races that didn't go to extra laps and Junior nabbed his third second place finish in those four races. The low line's lack of momentum off the corners doomed Junior off turn four on the final lap, but anyone who doubted his restrictor plate prowess can't do so anymore after watching that move down the backstretch on the final lap.

5. Mark Martin. Nice move to go with Junior there on the final lap for the 54 year-old driver of the No. 55. After the race, Mark glowed about how truly grateful he was for the opportunity to drive for Michael Waltrip Racing and work with the team. Which is also what he said after every race last season.

6. Greg Biffle. Second year, second place on the second-to-last lap, second time he didn't finish second. One of the things we were sure about going in to Sunday's race was that the second place car would have to make a move long before the finish line. Biffle never got close enough to Johnson to make that move and by the time the field was in turn three for the final time, the imperative switched from catching Johnson to fending off the field.

7. Ryan Newman. On Friday, Tony Stewart made a point in his press conference to reinforce the fact that Stewart-Haas Racing had three cars and that Newman drove for the team. Until Friday, we were unaware of that fact. Since Newman finished in the top 5, not only can you get that free Bloomin' Onion, but you also have a chance to get a free month's mortgage from Quicken. Odds of Newman keeping all his promotions straight the entire year: 1,000,000,000 - 1.

8. Regan Smith. The man who led Saturday's Nationwide race off turn four bounced back nicely on Sunday with a top 10 run. Dude's going to be a championship contender in NASCAR's No. 2 series this year and he'll be in many more 500s to come.

9. TIE. Michael McDowell and JJ Yeley. Score one for perseverance, eh? McDowell's first Cup Series top 10 came in his 115th Cup start and it was the first time that Yeley finished in the top 10 since 2008 at New Hampshire. It was a great moment for two guys who have spent most of recent history starting and parking in the Cup Series. We know Tommy Baldwin wants to let Yeley race as much as possible, hopefully the same can be said for Phil Parsons Racing.

11. Denny Hamlin. Score one for being the lone standing Joe Gibbs Racing car, I guess. Hamster led 33 laps and gave JGR a chance of having a first and worst weekend. Alas, he went backwards over the final laps of the race and finished 14th. Better than having a blown engine though.

12. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. We had to get Danica and Ricky in Power Rankings so that they could immortalize this, print it out, frame it and potentially show it to any future Stenicas that there's room in the From the Marbles Power Rankings for both of them.

Dropping Out: Dude, it's the first one of the season.

Lucky Dog: Aric Almirola. Not too often that you can bounce back from a pit road speeding penalty under green and come back to finish 13th.

DNF: Carl Edwards. Got in his fifth crash of Speedweeks. Honorable mention goes to Matt Kenseth, Kasey Kahne, Tony Stewart and Kevin Harvick. They all finished outside the top 30 too.

Coulthard wins Melbourne V8 opener

Fabian Coulthard claimed his maiden V8 Supercars victory in the opening race of the non-championship event supporting the Australian Grand Prix. The 30-year-old Holden driver converted his first pole position into the lead at the start of the 12-lap race. But his hopes of winning took a big hit when he lost the lead during the flurry of safety car pitstops triggered by Alex Premat crashing at Turn 1 on the second lap after hitting Lee Holdsworth's Erebus Mercedes as both were exiting the pits

Kyle Larson spins CE Falk for late model win at Daytona Battle at the Beach

As the Sprint Cup Series takes a brief break between qualifying and practices for the Budweiser Duels and Daytona 500, Monday and Tuesday are opportunities for drivers from NASCAR's regional and touring series to take to Daytona.

On Monday night, it was the NASCAR All-American Late Model Series and Kyle Larson spun CE Falk for the win as the two headed towards the checkered flag on the 0.4 mile temporary oval on the Daytona backstretch.

The evening's crashfest finally got an extended green-flag run at the end of the race, and Larson rumpled up his front bumper significantly while racing with Ben Rhodes for second place. At first, when Larson got around Rhodes, it looked like the damage on the front end of his car would be too significant to reel in Falk, but over the next laps, Larson did just that, setting up a great 10 lap battle between the two.

Over those 10 laps, the contact that Larson and Falk had made was nothing more than customary short-track late-lap fender rubbing. But on the final lap, Larson gave Falk a shove in turns 3 and 4 and then gave him another, harder one coming out of the corner and sent Falk's car spinning to the inside.

From NASCAR.com:

?It's the first race I've ever won in that manner, but this was a pretty big race,? Larson said. ?I wanted to win it. It's the last lap. You have to slow down so much in the center of the corner, I got run on him and got into the back of him. I got underneath him and then got him around. I feel bad for him, but like I said, I wanted to win.?

Larson is driving full-time in the Nationwide Series this season and Tony Stewart guaranteed he will be a star at last week's NASCAR media days. And his performance chasing down Falk with a battered car was evidence in favor of Stewart's guarantee. But that move to spin Falk on the final lap? Well, it's hard to defend that. It's one thing to make contact with a driver in the corner in an attempt to move him out of the way. It's another to smack him coming off the corner like that to really get him out of the way.

Do you have an issue with what Larson did last night? Fair game or a low-blow? Drop us a line in the comments.
