NASCAR unveils new penalty structure for appeals and enforcement

If you were still trying to understand how NASCAR's penalty system worked, stop. You've got a new system to learn. And this one comes with a flowchart.

The sanctioning body announced a new system for penalties and appeals on Tuesday. It features tiers of penalties and a new Final Appeals Officer. Teams will now be given warnings for minor infractions and then penalties will increase on a six-tier basis in the new "Deterrence System."

From NASCAR:

  • Warnings are issued instead of penalties for certain types of minor, first-time infractions.
  • P1 penalties may result from multiple warnings to the same team.
  • P2 penalties may include but are not limited to violations such as hollow components, expiration of certain safety certification or improper installation of a safety feature, or minor bracket and fasteners violations.
  • P3 penalty options may include but are not limited to violations such as unauthorized parts, measurement failures, parts that fail their intended use, or coil spring violation.
  • P4 level infractions may include but are not limited to violations such as devices that circumvent NASCAR templates and measuring equipment, or unapproved added weight .
  • P5 level may include but are not limited to violations such as combustion-enhancing additives in the oil, oil filter, air filter element or devices, systems, omissions, etc., that affect the normal airflow over the body.
  • P6 level may include but are not limited to violations such as affecting the internal workings and performance of the engine, modifying the pre-certified chassis, traction control or affecting EFI or the ECU.

A P1 penalty may be the last chance of pit selection, a loss of track time in practice or qualifying and even community service. Here's the grid for the Sprint Cup Series. While a win wouldn't officially be taken away -- per previous penalty enforcement -- for a P6 penalty, the major penalty would disallow the win for Chase eligibility.

The appeals process is featured on the aforementioned flowchart. Bryan Moss, former president of Gulfstream Aerospeace is the Finals Appeals Officer, replacing former GM executive John Middlebrook as the sport's Chief Appellate Officer.

Got all that? It'll be fun to see the first violations of the penalty system and how it will unfold. To make the Chase, a driver must attempt to qualify for every race. When asked about how a behavioral suspension could affect Chase qualification, NASCAR VP Steve O'Donnell said Chase eligibility would be handled at the time of any penalty.

Danica Patrick on Richard Petty: Everyone is entitled to their opinion

Earlier this week, Richard Petty had some strong comments directed towards Danica Patrick and her ability to win a stock car race at NASCAR?s highest level. Petty said that the only way the 31-year old driver could win a race is,?If everybody else stayed home.? Patrick, who has remained calm in the past when she was faced with scrutiny regarding her driving ability, was asked about Petty?s comments at NASCAR Media Day on Thursday. ?You know, people [...]

It?s Your 2013 Exit Interview: No. 8 Joey Logano

Welcome to From the Marbles' 2013 driver reviews. Here, we're going to critique, praise and bloviate about the top 30 drivers in the 2013 NASCAR season.

Did you find that you were well trained for the rarefied air of the Chase levels, Joey?

Congratulations on the promotion to the NASCAR playoffs. I know it may not have seemed like such a big deal because there have been CEO-level expectations since you first started full-time. Hell, they existed when you started part-time. Sweeping floors, we imagine. Though you haven't worked at Hendrick (yet), so maybe it's different in other departments.

That promotion also came a year after a transfer, which we can say fairly comfortably was a catalyst for your success. We're going to also go ahead and view it like one of those trades that benefits both teams. No regrets, right?

You excelled at intermediate tracks this year, which is a good building block given the dominance of 1-2 mile tracks on the Cup schedule. That win at Michigan proved to be handy, and you could have had the win at Fontana too, but we all know what happened there.

It looked like you were going to continue that theme in the Chase too. But no, your car went boom.

Your new surroundings brought some more feistiness, and that feistiness had some bite because of your success. It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if your rivalries with an old teammate and the man you effectively replaced in your old department. Spice is good. And it can go well with sliced bread.

Kyle Busch stood in at a Las Vegas wedding on Wednesday

When you get the opportunity to have Kyle Busch be a groomsman at your wedding, you must seize it with all of your might.

As part of a promotional appearance at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Wednesday, Busch was in the wedding of Crystal and Bobby Dezarov. How did this all happen? Well, Crystal wrote the Las Vegas Motor Speedway about the couple's desire to get married in October and her love of Busch.

But, we must note, it's not as much as her love for her husband.

From the Las Vegas Review-Journal:

Crystal, who is a veterinary assistant in Palm Desert, Calif., when she?s not watching Kyle Busch drive around in circles, was out wrangling a pony when the speedway called back.

They said the Goody?s Headache Relief Shot 500 was in October in Martinsville, Va., and three other races were scheduled in October, and all of these races were part of the Chase for the Sprint Cup. So chances were that Kyle was going to be a little busy then.

But the speedway people were bringing him to town on Jan. 21, to help spur ticket sales for the Kobalt 400 at LVMS on March 9. If the happy couple would consider moving the wedding up, perhaps they could say something to Kyle.

The Dezarovs agreed, and the Speedway asked Busch to be in the wedding. It was a perfect fit, it's just that the engagement was not nearly as long as Crystal and Bobby were originally planning.

The nine-minute wedding went off without a hitch. The pastor presiding over the wedding was even a Carolina native and told Busch he was a Bobby Isaac fan. Afterwards, Busch posed for pictures, signed an autograph for Crystal's son and signed the couple's wedding document.

Weddings at NASCAR tracks on Sprint Cup weekends have become a fairly common occurrence. In August, a couple got married at Michigan International Speedway's victory lane as the groomsmen wore Dale Earnhardt Jr. firesuits. A year earlier at Michigan, track president Roger Curtis officiated a victory lane wedding.

But weddings with NASCAR drivers actually in them? Far more uncommon. Here's wishing the happy couple much success in the future.

It?s Your 2013 Exit Interview: No. 6 Jeff Gordon

Welcome to From the Marbles' 2013 driver reviews. Here, we're going to critique, praise and bloviate about the top 30 drivers in the 2013 NASCAR season.

Well, we guess it's fitting that you're next, Jeff.

What happened at Richmond wasn't your fault, and you were collateral damage. Kind of like the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. The Chiefs missed that field goal, the Chargers won the game and the Steelers missed the playoffs.

BUT WAIT. The Chargers played that play illegally and didn't get caught by NFL officials. The Chiefs could have had a chance to kick the field goal again. The Steelers could have been in the playoffs.

Roger Goodell is not scheduling a press conference for Friday and diverting the Chargers' plane to Cincinnati. If NASCAR was in charge, well, maybe.

And what happened at Chicago to get you into the Chase wasn't your fault either. You were the beneficiary instead of collateral damage. For NASCAR masochists, it was disappointing you didn't win the title. Think of the craziness that could have ensued. It's probably best that it didn't.

That Chase appearance kept you in the top 10 -- you've done that all but one season since 1993, your second season on the circuit. And that win at Martinsville served as a bit of validation, especially after an eight-year winless streak. It probably had to sting just a tad to see the track that you once dominated taken over in that stretch by your teammate.

You also had eight top five finishes this year, which is an exceptional year for a lot of drivers. That's tied for the fewest you've had since 1994. That's the standard you've set for yourself.

Where will that standard be as your career continues? Is there one last run left? It'd be fun to watch.
