2014 Season Preview: No. 4 Kyle Busch

Welcome to From the Marbles' 2014 season previews. Here's how we think the Chase will shake out in this first year of 16 drivers and eliminations. Will we be right? Unlikely, but it's fun to think about our soothsaying possibilities until the green flag waves for the Daytona 500 on Feb. 23.
Driver: Kyle Busch
2013 Finish: 4th
2013 Highlight: Quick, name a race other than California in 2013 that Busch came out of nowhere to win? OK, sure Busch led 125 of the race's 200 laps, but it was down to Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin. Or so we thought.
Heck, Busch might have won the race had the two drivers ahead of him not crashed.
Random note that has little to do with 2013: Busch has won 28 Sprint Cup Series races. In 13 of those, he's led over 100 laps. In 18 of those wins, he's started in the top 10. So no, it's not a monstrous illusion when it feels that a lot of Busch's wins come from when he's near the front the entire day.
2013 Lowlight: Kansas, Kansas, Kansas, Kansas. The track has a mysterious stranglehold on Busch, and maybe it's because he set the karmic wheels in motion with what happened with Brad Keselowski in the Nationwide race on Saturday.
If this trend continues, Busch may be the driver who benefits the most from NASCAR's decision to grant a Chase segment winner a pass into the next round. If Busch gets a win during the three-race period that includes Kansas Speedway, the track can mess with him as much as possible and his Chase future won't be impacted.
Why is Busch here? Because Busch is going to take a step forward and be in contention for the Chase at Homestead sooner rather than later. Despite basically eliminating himself at Kansas last year, he still finished fourth in the standings. We're of the belief that it may be a two-step process for Busch. Get to the final race and know it's possible. And then worry about winning it.
How could Busch not be here? The Chase gets derailed again and Busch is eliminated in one of the first two segments. Maybe if an engine demon strikes again or something. But we're oddly confident this is the year that he takes one of the two steps in the process outlined above.
Best Winter Olympic event: Kyle Busch as a biathlete seems like something you'd totally watch, right?
Worst Winter Olympic event: We've used figure skating previously, but there's something oddly intriguing and yet terrifying about seeing Busch in a sequined costume attempting a jump.

Early Season Struggles Threaten Kahne?s Hendrick Debut
That’s what Kasey Kahne might be asking himself after a difficult start to the 2012 Sprint Cup season that sees him a mediocre 27th in points, worst among the four Hendrick Motorsports drivers in his first year with the team. Last week’s 14th place [...]

2014 Season Preview: No. 15 Ryan Newman

Driver: Ryan Newman
2013 Finish: 11th
2013 Highlight: Newman won at Indianapolis in July, and then had an even bigger highlight after a potential lowlight. It wasn't nearly as climactic as getting to kiss the bricks, but Newman got into the Chase on the Monday after Richmond when NASCAR assessed penalties to Michael Waltrip Racing for race manipulation.
2013 Lowlight: When Clint Bowyer spun and started the Richmond goofiness in earnest, Newman was leading the race. He wasn't off of pit road under the caution flag, and after the race he had some harsh words for his crew. Even though he ended up making the Chase and was rewarded with an early morning media trip to Phoenix, those comments were a bit of public acrimony in his departure from Stewart-Haas Racing. Much like Kevin Harvick's remarks at Martinsville, it was something that wouldn't have been said if there was a future between Newman and the team.
Why is Newman here? In 12 full Sprint Cup seasons, Newman has finished outside the top 15 just twice. He's also won at least one race in nine of those seasons. And in eight of those seasons, he's had a win before the 26th race of the season.
So what does that mean? We're fairly confident that Newman will snag a win somewhere in the first 26 races or that he'll be high enough in the points standings to sneak into the Chase without a win.
How could Newman not be here? Who is a better litmus test of the "swap" between Richard Childress Racing and SHR? Newman or Kevin Harvick? While Harvick has been a perennial contender at RCR, the rest of the team hasn't been vying for Chase berths. Was Harvick overperforming? Will Newman settle into the 15-20 range like Paul Menard and Jeff Burton before him? If the answer to those two questions is in the affirmative, then we have the answer to the question in bold.
Best Winter Olympic event: Curling. Here's where we say cliche things about Newman's engineering degree and how he'd be able to figure out the angles needed to win, etc. etc.
Worst Winter Olympic event: Figure skating. Can you see Newman attempting at triple axel? We can't.

Flagman ducks to avoid flying window during Truck Series practice at Daytona
When you're in the NASCAR flagstand, the action usually happens below you. But, as Rodney Wise showed Thursday, there's the rare occasion when the action gets very close.
The right-side window fell out of Justin Jennings' truck during Camping World Truck Series practice. As soon as it popped loose, it took off in the air and flew towards the flagstand.
Fortunately, Wise saw the window in time and was able to duck as it flew over his head and off the catchfence. And trust us when we say that it looks a lot less dramatic in slow-motion.
Practice was yellow-flagged for the window and after pulling into the garage, Jennings' team affixed a new window to the car.
