Casey Mears and Marcos Ambrose fined and put on probation for post-Richmond fight

NASCAR fined Marcos Ambrose and Casey Mears for their roles in a post-race fight Saturday night at Richmond.

"Ambrose, driver of the No. 9 car, and Mears, driver of the No. 13 car, were found to have violated Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing), and 12-4.9 (Behavioral Penalty; involved in an altercation in the garage area after the race) as outlined in the 2014 NASCAR rule book," NASCAR's penalty statement said. "As a result, Ambrose has been fined $25,000 and placed on NASCAR probation until May 28, while Mears has been fined $15,000 and placed on NASCAR probation until May 28."

Ambrose and Mears were discussing what took place on the track in the garage when Mears grabbed Ambrose and pushed him away from where the two were standing. Ambrose then punched Mears in the head before they were separated.

A crew member can be seen throwing a punch towards Ambrose as he's being taken away from Mears, but the two drivers were the only two people named in NASCAR's penalty release. Ambrose confirmed the punch thrown by the crew member didn't land.

Shortly after the announcement, Richard Petty Motorsports released a statement saying Ambrose wouldn't appeal the penalty.

NHTSA investigating 110,000 Ram 2500s and 3500s, one death alleged

2005 Dodge Ram 3500

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched an investigation focusing on 110,000 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups from model years 2004 to 2006. One death has already been reported, according to NHTSA, due to a potential fault with the clutch interlocks on manual-transmission versions of the heavy duty pickup.

According to the report, these trucks can be started without depressing the clutch. There have been three reports so far, and as we mentioned above, one very sad incident seems to have resulted in the death of a child.

"One complaint involved an incident that occurred when a child was able to enter the vehicle and start the ignition without depressing the clutch. The vehicle then moved forward striking another child resulting in a fatality," NHTSA said in the investigation bulletin, which you can view below.

Another person was struck in a similar situation, although there were no injuries reported in that particular incident.

"In keeping with Chrysler Group's longstanding practice, the Company is cooperating fully with this investigation. Chrysler Group vehicles meet or exceed all applicable safety mandates. Customer safety is paramount at Chrysler Group," Chrysler spokesman Nick Cappa told Autoblog via email.

We'll stay with this story, should anything more come up. Scroll down for the official bulletin from NHTSA.

If A.J. Allmendinger is voted in to the All-Star Race, he'll do the worm

KANSAS CITY, Kan. ? A.J. Allmendinger will dance if you vote for him. OK, if enough people vote for him.

Allmendinger said he'll do the worm if he gets voted in to the Sprint All-Star Race next weekend. There's just one problem, he's facing an uphill battle -- no, it's a cliff -- against the starpower that is Danica Patrick.

"Because they've got to be tired of voting for Danica, I really feel like," Allmendinger said Friday when he was asked why people should vote for him in the All-Star Race. "I'm a fun loving guy. I was with Miss Sprint Cup last week, we were talking about it. I said I would do the worm across the stage if I get voted in, bust a move, whatever."

What will he do if he races his way in? It's not a farfetched scenario, given the team's recent success. After running Toyotas previously, JTG-Daugherty Racing switched to Chevrolets and an alliance with Richard Childress Racing for the 2014 season.

He's 15th in the standings after finishing sixth at Richmond and fifth at Talladega.

"I'm trying not to get too high with where we are right now because there is so much time," Allmendinger said. "I will worry about possible Chase or where we are at in points when we are 20 races in, things like that. At the beginning of the year if you said coming into Kansas you are 15th, you are right on the edge, you have had three top 10s, you have been running well, I would have said 'Perfect, I'm happy with that.'

"I'm happy with where we are right now, but not satisfied. I know we have a lot of room to improve and a lof steps we need to improve on."

Ed Carpenter wins second consecutive Indianapolis 500 pole; Kurt Busch 12th

Ed Carpenter is starting first in the Indianapolis 500 again.

The last qualifier during Sunday's pole qualifying session at Indianapolis, Carpenter snatched the pole from James Hinchcliffe with his four-lap run of 231.067 MPH.

Carpenter started on the pole in the 2013 Indianapolis 500 and finished 10th.

After suffering a concussion in last week's Grand Prix of Indianapolis, Hinchcliffe's Indy 500 was in doubt. However, he was cleared by IndyCar doctors earlier in the week and was able to practice the car before qualifying began.

The top nine qualifiers from Saturday's qualifying session were eligible for the pole on Sunday. Kurt Busch was 10th Saturday, so he was forced to run again and was unable to improve his position. After Sunday's run, Busch will start 12th. Juan Pablo Montoya, in his first Indianapolis 500 since he won in 2000, was the fastest of the non-top nine qualifiers. He'll start 10th.

Busch left Saturday's qualifying session early to get back to Charlotte for the Sprint Cup Series Sprint All-Star Race and only made one attempt. After running the All-Star Race last night, Busch returned to Indianapolis Sunday morning.

After Carpenter and Hinchcliffe, Will Power completes the front row. Helio Castroneves will start fourth and Simon Pagenaud, the winner of the Indy GP, starts fifth.

33 cars attempted to qualify for the race, so no one will miss the show.
