How We?d Spec It: The Perfect GMC Sierra 1500 Denali

This probably won?t surprise anyone, but we have a number of racers, track-day junkies, and vintage-car owners on staff, so tow vehicles are highly prized around our office. While there are many fine trucks suited to such tasks, Chevrolet?s Silverado won our most recent pickup truck comparison test, making it our top choice in the […]

2014 NASCAR World Cup Group G: Kyle Larson and A.J. Allmendinger battle for second

Throughout the summer we're running our second NASCAR World Cup. Will Carl Edwards repeat? Or will someone else take the title? Click here for a NASCAR World Cup explanation and a list of all the groups.

Group H: Jeff Gordon (1st in points, 1 win), Kyle Larson (10th, 0), A.J. Allmendinger (20th, 0), Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (26th, 0)

Michigan Matchups: Gordon vs. Allmendinger, Larson vs. Stenhouse

Sonoma Matchups: Gordon vs. Stenhouse, Larson vs. Allmendinger

Kentucky Matchups: Gordon vs. Larson, Allmendinger vs. Stenhouse

Our points leader looks to be the clear favorite in this group. He's been very consistent on intermediate tracks and has a good draw at Sonoma, where he'll be favored over Stenhouse. After Gordon qualified second at Michigan Friday, did you know that the only Hendrick driver since Gordon last won there in 2001 to win at Michigan is Dale Earnhardt Jr.? In that stretch, Gordon hasn't been bad though. He had a crash with Bobby Labonte in 2013 and blew an engine in 2012, but he still has 12 top 10 finishes since.

Second place could come down to Larson and Allmendinger matchup, continuing our theme of thinking that road course races could be the deciding factors in the group. Larson famously has had issues shifting, hence his ARCA race (and win) at Pocono and Chip Ganassi's insistence he drive a stick-shift Camaro before racing at the triangle. And Allmendigner tested for two days at Sonoma and won at Road America and Mid-Ohio in the Nationwide Series last season. That gives him the advantage at Sonoma, and if he can beat Stenhouse at Kentucky, he's probably moving on.

Projected standings: Gordon 3-0, Allmendinger 2-1, Larson 1-2, Stenhouse 0-3

Greg Biffle reportedly set to stay with Roush Fenway Racing

Carl Edwards, all of the Roush contract attention is on you.

On Sunday, the Charlotte Observer reported that Greg Biffle and sponsor 3M will sign a contract extension with Roush Fenway Racing. The Sporting News reported that while no deal had been reached, both Biffle and 3M were expected to remain with the team.

The futures of Biffle and Edwards have been the NASCAR contract world's two biggest stories, especially with the performance of Roush Fenway Racing. While Edwards has a win at Bristol and Biffle has been consistent, the Roush cars haven't been in the same class of the Hendrick, Stewart-Haas, Penske or Joe Gibbs Racing cars in terms of speed.

There have been few public clues about Edwards' future. Joe Gibbs Racing is viewed as his most likely non-Roush suitor, as the team has the capacity to expand to four teams to accommodate Edwards. On Saturday, Roger Penske, owner of Team Penske, told Catchfence.com his team had no interest in Edwards for a third team.

If Biffle re-signs with Roush, it could be the last major contract of Biffle's career. While still near the top of the Sprint Cup Series heap, he's 44-years-old. It's the only team he's driven for in his Sprint Cup Series career. He has 19 career Sprint Cup Series wins and has won titles in both the Camping World Truck Series and Nationwdie Series. With a Sprint cup title, he'd be the first driver to win all three series.

Bentley considering smaller coupe

Bentley badge

Only halfway through the year, Bentley reports that it's on track to post record sales. Thanks in no small part to the introduction of its new V8 engine in the Continental family, sales are up nearly a quarter over last year. And they only stand to increase even more with the introduction of new models currently in the pipeline. The upcoming SUV will surely form a large part of that, but it won't be the end of the story for the storied marque.

Car and Driver reports that, after the SUV, Bentley plans to introduce a new coupe line below the Continental to square off against the Aston Martin V8 Vantage. Details are few and far between at this point, but considering how much Bentley manages to do with the relatively heft Continental GT, a lighter and more nimble sports car sounds promising.

In related news, rumors are gathering pace that Bentley is planning to introduce a new Mulsanne Speed at the upcoming Paris Motor Show, its Jurassic-era 6.75-liter V8 massaged from 505 horsepower - already the most that engine has produced in its half-century history - up to around 550.

Don't think that Bentley has given up, however, on its venerable 6.0-liter twin-turbo W-12 engine. Far from it. Car and Driver also reports that the crew from Crewe only plans to further develop the W-12, and if push came to shove, would be the "last manufacturer of 12-cylinder engines in the world." Indeed it already is among the last, although BMW/Rolls-Royce, Lamborghini, Mercedes and Ferrari aren't likely to give up on dozen-piston engines anytime soon, either... even if Aston Martin eventually does. Expect direct injection and even more powerful versions than the 616-hp Continental GT Speed to follow in the near future.
