24 Hours of Spa race featured a lot of accidents at the beginning

The start of the 24 Hours of Spa sports car race in Belgium had a lot of accidents.

There were four cautions in the first three hours of the race, including for this ridiculous accident. Watch the first part of the crash on the left side of your screen and then watch the tire going to the right.

This crash below, again at the Eau Rouge portion of the historic track, was a one-car incident, but it might have been scarier. Vyacheslav Maleev lost control after hitting the curb on a right-hand corner and slammed into the tire barrier across the track. Then, as cars were storming up the hill as the race looked to still be under green, Maleev got out of his car.

While we understand his hurry to get out of the mangled car, we can't endorse the manuever.

And as soon as he got out, he tripped over debris ... as cars were still flying by. He finally hobbled over to the inside of the track as marshals instructed cars driving through the debris field to slow down.

Dashcam video of Taiwan's gas-triggered street explosions hits the web

Taiwan Gas Main Explosion

Dashcam video has brought us some fantastic images over the years, but it recorded true tragedy overnight on July 31 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. A gas main explosion in the city was responsible for at least 25 deaths and over 250 injuries, according to The Wall Street Journal. The cause of the horrific event is still under investigation. However, people in the area reported smelling gas beforehand.

The mix of dashcam, surveillance, cell phone and drone video shows several portions of this tragedy and its aftermath. Flames shot up several feet into the sky and explosions rocked the area. Now, as far as you can see, the road has been blown apart with huge chunks of asphalt and overturned cars littering the area. We extend our condolences to anyone affected by this disaster.

Carl Edwards OUT at Roush-Fenway Racing after season

This year?s version of the worst kept secret is finally out.
Three hours before the green flag is set to drop at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Roush-Fenway Racing confirmed that Carl Edwards, driver of the No. 99, will not return after the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup season.
Which left no one surprised. For months, it has been speculated that Carl Edwards would leave at the end of the season, even though at some points, it seemed as though he may re-sign with RFR.
While the NASCAR community has no idea where Edwards will end up in 2015, it is known that he will have a new home.
Greg Biffle and Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. will continue driving their Fords respectively, while former Daytona 500 champion, Trevor Bayne will make his full-time return to Cup in the No. 6.
?I will always be thankful for Carl?s contribution and the role he played in many Roush Fenway wins and championships,? team owner Jack Roush said in a statement.
?We wish him well for the future. In ...

Power Rankings: The only driver that can unseat Jimmie Johnson? Jimmie Johnson

Our Power Rankings are far from a scientific formula. In fact, it's the perfect blend of analytics and bias against your favorite driver. And you think we dislike your favorite driver, so it makes sense, right? Direct all your complaints to us at happyhourmailbag@yahoo.com.

1. Jimmie Johnson (LW: 1): Only a true Vader-hater could make a case for Johnson dropping from the top spot after his Michigan win on Sunday. While it's impressive that Johnson was able to cross Michigan off the list of tracks he hadn't won at, it's imperative to also remember that he hasn't exactly been terrible there. He just has had some crappy luck. He had no such crappy luck on Sunday.

2. Dale Earnhardt Jr. (LW: 2): After finishing seventh, Junior said his team should have finished three or four spots better than they did. And he's probably right. He had a top-five car but as the strategy wheel spun around int he final third of the race, Junior's need for tires put him back in the pack. But hey, he's disappointed about a seventh place finish, just like another driver coming up soon was disappointed about getting second.

3. Jeff Gordon (LW: 3): We'll also continue the theme with Gordon, who said he felt sixth place wasn't indicative of the car that he had on Sunday. But guess what? That fabled track position reared its ugly head and Gordon never head it. Track position has always been a factor at Michigan, but without significant tire wear, its importance is expontially more than it once was. We're starting to move forward with our ideas for the Sandpaper Titan to manually age tracks. We'll be like the anti-Neutrogena wrinkle cream of NASCAR.

4. Kevin Harvick (LW: 4): Our From the Marbles sources told us that Harvick was singing this on the entire flight home from Michigan. "Clap along if you feel like second really stinks. Because I?m not happy. Clap along if you feel like happiness is a win. Because I'm not happy. Clap along if you know why I was really mad. Because I?m not happy. Clap along if you feel like I should have five or six wins."

5. Brad Keselowski (LW: 5): This is a really, really, really boring top five this week. That's what happens when the top five drivers finish in the top six. After the race, Keselowski (who finished third), said that the Hendrick-powered cars were a full-season ahead on horsepower compared to the rest of the field. It was clear on Sunday, as they led 163 of the race's 200 laps. Is the only thing that could derail their advantage anytime soon a significant engine format change for 2015?

6. Joey Logano (LW: 8): We needed to shake things up and this was about as shaky as we could get. Logano finished ninth and led 29 laps, though none of them were after lap 141, when he was passed by Kevin Harvick for the lead. It's becoming more and more clear that if there's a team and program able to compete with the Hendrick cars (and Kevin Harvick) for the title, it's Team Penske.

7. Matt Kenseth (LW: 6): Kenseth's relative lack of intermediate track speed is a symbol of how JGR feels they're a bit behind. And we say relative simply because when compared side-to-side, the only thing that's striking is his lack of wins. At non-restrictor plate Darlington-sized tracks and above this year he's finished 10th, 4th, 7th, 4th 10th, 3rd and 14th. Last year at those same tracks he was 1st, 7th, 12th, 1st, 1st, 15th and 6th.

8. Kyle Larson (LW: 10): Did Larson inspire a new wave of potential bumper damage for benefit with his Michigan performance? Rear-bumper damage isn't exactly groundbreaking (See Knaus, Chad at Talladega in 2011), but maybe Larson's run to eighth will usher in a new trend of purposeful spins necessitating a demolition of the back bumper cover. (Are you lost after reading the above graph? After spinning on lap 7, Larson had damage to the back bumper that could have been beneficial in terms of downforce and being able to create more speed.)

9. Paul Menard (LW: NR): Win a Nationwide race and finish fourth? Welcome to Power Rankings, PFM. After finishing third at Las Vegas and his Sunday finish at Michigan, Menard has the only top-fives for Richard Childress Racing all season. But they've been damn consistent. If the Chase started today, Menard and Ryan Newman would both be in and Austin Dillon would be just nine points out.

10. Jamie McMurray (LW: 10): Speaking of bumpers, McMurray didn't have a rear bumper at Pocono. Maybe this is a Ganassi thing? His car was intact on Sunday and he finished 12th. For as good as McMurray has looked in stretches this year, he's in a position where he's going to need a win to get to the Chase.

11. Carl Edwards (LW: 7): Sunday, the first time since 2000 that no Roush cars finished in the top 10 at Michigan. How crazy is that? Greg Biffle was 20th, Edwards was 23rd and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was 27th. If you're one of the people wondering if Edwards' finishes and his team's speed are impacting his contract negotiations, well, you're probably leaning towards a different team for 2015 at the moment.

12. Kasey Kahne (LW: NR): Is this the finish that gets Kasey Kahne going? His season has been abysmal, especially when compared to his teammates occupying the top three positions in the points stadings. But he's won before at Sonoma, run well at Kentucky and won at New Hampshire. He's got a good stretch coming up.

Lucky Dog: The third-highest finishing Ford at Michigan? Juan Pablo Montoya in his first NASCAR race of the year.

The DNF: A problem on the left-rear hub meant a 41st-place finish for Kyle Busch.

Dropped out: Busch, Denny Hamlin

The No. 77 is 'retooling,' which means there are only 42 Cup cars entered at Kentucky

The No. 77 car owned by Randy Humphrey and driven by Dave Blaney has made four Sprint Cup Series starts this season. Its highest finish is 33rd in those four starts. No, the No. 77 has not been a barnburner in the Cup Series.

This week, Humphrey told NASCAR.com that the team was "retooling" and hoped to be back at Indianapolis. After entering the first 15 races of the season, the team skipped Sonoma and, as of now, will miss three more races.

Normally, the absence of a team struggling to make the field in the Cup Series isn't noticeable to most NASCAR fans. But it's notable this weekend. It means that as of Wednesday, the entry list for the Cup race at Kentucky on Saturday night has 42 cars on it. A full field is 43 cars. (Part-time teams like the Wood Brothers and Leavine Family Racing don't have Kentucky on the schedule.)

If the race starts with 42 cars, it'll break a streak that's gone on for more than 12 years. The last time a race was run without 43 cars was at New Hampshire in 2001, when the race was run in November instead of September because of the Sept. 11 attacks. (The race, run on the Friday after Thanksgiving, was set by owner's points at the time of the originally scheduled and the No. 27 team had folded since. Thus, no replacement was found.)

The last time a qualifying session was held with less than a full field in the Cup Series entered? You have to go all the way back to Dover in 1996, according to Jayski.

Is the lack of a 43rd car a big deal? That's up for you to decide, though if you think it is, don't go reaching for the megaphone to exclaim that the sky is falling. It does mean that each of NASCAR's top three series will have had a short field in 2014 and it's become obvious that there are significant barriers to entry for new and/or underfunded teams trying to make it in NASCAR.

But that's the case with or without one more car entered at Kentucky. NASCAR's national series, especially the Cup Series, are extremely close through speeds and scoring monitors. However, close doesn't always equal competitive; it's why wins like Front Row's at Talladega last year are so exciting. Smaller teams simply don't have a chance of winning most every weekend.

It would have been a victory for the No. 77 to finish above 30th at Kentucky, which is why, again, most fans wouldn't notice its absence on Saturday night. But because of it, there looks like there will be 21 full rows starting the race instead of 21.5. Will you notice that? Maybe. Is the absence of the half row indicative of issues facing teams in NASCAR? Definitely. Will it impact the race's outcome or how you view it? Not at all.

Ford, Ram in heavy-duty towing spat

2015 Ford F-450

2014 Ram 3500Every pickup truck commercial has the brand trying to convince us that its model is the biggest, brawniest vehicle on the block. But Ford and Ram appear ready to really throw down the gauntlet and scrap over the towing figures for their heavy-duty models, and it could potentially end up in court.

The issue revolves around what it means to be best in class. Ford claims that its 2015 F-450 (pictured above) has a max tow rating of 31,200 pounds, compared to 30,000 pounds for the Ram 3500 (right). However, both companies market these heavy haulers as having the top towing in their class. According to Automotive News, Ford is threatening legal action if Ram doesn't back down.

The situation isn't as simple as just comparing the numbers, though. First, the two companies calculate their towing capacities differently. Ram adheres to the SAE J2807 rating, while Ford uses its own internal system. Although, as the company introduces new models, they are certified using the SAE standard. "When an all-new F-Series Super Duty is introduced, it also will use SAE J2807," said Ford to Autoblog in an emailed statement.

The second issue hinges on whether the F-450 and Ram 3500 are even in the same class at all. The "best-in-class" boast hinges on both trucks belonging to the Department of Transportation's Class 3 rules, stipulating that above a gross vehicle weight rating of 14,000 pounds, a model moves into Class 4. Ford claims that the F-450 has a GVWR of exactly that amount. However, according to Automotive News, the company removes the spare tire, tire jack and center console to reach that number.

Ford is sticking to its guns, though. "The 2015 F-450 pickup is a Class 3 (10,001 lbs. - 14,000 lbs. GVWR) dual rear-wheel, chassis-certified pickup truck," said the company in a statement emailed to Autoblog.

Although, Ram isn't changing course either. "Our best-in-class claim of 30,000 pounds of towing capacity for the 2014 Ram 3500 stands firm in the 350/3500 segment. Additionally, unlike our competitors, our new 2015 Ram 3500 will hold the title and weight capacity while adhering to the SAE J2807 towing test criteria," said Ram in a statement emailed to Autoblog.
